I had to chuckle over Jonah's comments about his daughter's concern about people younger than her remembering the present crisis. Reminds me how I tend to classify people as to whether they were too young to remember the first moon walk.
Good pod. Glad to hear Jonah and Steve push back against argument that it is senseless to push back against the charge of racism for using Wuhan or China label for the virus. We all agree that this is not the most pressing issue during a crisis, but J and S rightly point out that both accuracy and realism require recognizing and not hiding PRC culpability in this crisis. In addition, I disagree with David that resisting the racism charge is just nut picking on Twitter by folks on the right. Every week there is another redefinition of racism, sexism, trans phobia, etc. it starts with the Twitter left, but the media go along and we quickly are in Orwell territory. Those seeking to limit immigration (which I don’t) are accused of racism, those opposing men winning women’s sports events are “trans phobic”, and now those seeking to use the logical and descriptive term “Wuhan virus” are racist. If we don’t resist, these “just semantics” battles change our language and our culture. Collectively, the leftist assault on language seeks to stop us from debating them openly. Stop saying “illegal alien” or be shamed, etc. now, language evolves and not all requests to change terminology are wrong. What IS wrong is to label me racist for saying Wuhan virus and for conservatives to let these things pass one after another.
