Can Joe Biden heal the rampant degree of polarization that’s currently plaguing our nation’s politics? “There is an element on the left side of the aisle that is every bit as hostile to their fellow citizens as there are on the right edges,” David tells Sarah on today’s episode. “But the thing is, Biden won the primary by specifically shunning that part of the Democratic base.” After their post-Inauguration Day reflections on Biden’s swearing in ceremony and the state of polarization in America, our hosts chat about the NRA’s bankruptcy status and Biden’s flurry of first-day executive orders.

    Nice sentiments about empathy and finding good faith in others.
    Although the Executive Order (EO) analysis seemed selective. I wish David and Sarah had commented on Biden's EO on the 1776 Commission (dismissed as racist), cancelling the directive about "removing 2 regulations for every one that is added", bringing back Critical Race Theory training to gov't, as well as the merits on the border wall EO (does Biden care about enforcing immigration laws?). Finally, while there are encouraging signs in some of Biden's rhetoric and cabinet picks, was there a single centrist/unity EO?

    Good job on the Undivided, I agree I think many people have changed for the good, many of them right here, I believe we are the hope and good examples for the rest...and the EO's..thanks so much on those, because I didn't read them(obviously) and all I was seeing is why the country was being destroyed by Biden with them....lol..and I had no rebuttal....lol

    The chicken thing amuses me...I am not a real fan of chicken generally, just don't really like it all that much and it has to be white meat when I do eat it...but, I do love breading, hot sauce and BBQ sauce so will eat it that way, because it covers the taste of the chicken really well...lol..never had and don't like chicken sandwiches at all

    Also, never heard of Bojangles, don't think there are any around me, and while I am familiar with the names of Popeye's and Chik- fil-a, there are none in my immediate area, though I have seen them traveling...so, what I have is KFC, and as far as fried chicken goes ( extra cripsy) ...that is my favorite...they also have awesome mashed potatoes and biscuits...lol

    I enjoyed the discussion of the executive orders but wished they had delved into the Keystone XL permit a bit more. I can understand (and support) the the President gets to change the policies of his predecessors, but it seems odd that he can revoke a permit without any justification (other than politics). The legal concept of a permit is that the government is granting you the right to do something. Generally once that right is granted, it can't be revoked unless you violate its terms. In particular, if a company relies on the permit to invest money etc. it seems unjust to revoke the permit. I am wondering if there are any legal claims that can be pursued here and, if not, why not.

      I have a suspicion that this particular E.O. won’t survive. Too many high-paying union jobs being lost for what amounts to a nod to the environmentalists. PM Trudeau is in favor of the pipeline; and it can be argued that potential for environmental damage from shipping the crude oil by traditional methods is much greater than by underground pipes. I imagine the two leaders spent much of their first phone visit discussing the pipeline.

    Oh David and Sarah, you may have really, really done it this time. Not genuflecting at the alter of the 2nd Amendment made real on earth, and actually questioning the intentions of its high priest, Lord LaPierre. After listening to your comments, with which I wholeheartedly agree, I will be a little surprised if there isn't blowback from the NRA faithful.

    Good night, and good luck, I'll miss absorbing your insights about politics because all your future time will be spent answering for this heresy you have perpetrated against the cornerstone of the right.

    I like ethical pledges. I like the no you can't lobby for 2 years.

    This is not a contract and it's unenforceable as a bar to making a living.

    Awesomeness at Sarah on Bankruptcy of the NRA! Wayne Lapierre is really the poster child of power corruption.

    I would go with David and Sarah on let's try removing the Filibuster because utter stagnation is not in the national interest. Sweeping changes like the Affordable Care Act stood when Republicans had unilateral authority and control to pass Amendments to effect their improvements. The GOP did nothing.

    Joe Manchin and Kristin Sinema would be huge and great improvements over Mitch McConnell. Remove the Filibuster and it's a troika of Manchin, Schumer, Sinema even Romney and Murkowski.

    That works.

    Sarah hit early in this podcast on something that I have been reflecting on for a while now - which is the benefit of taking a step back and finding the good faith in the other side’s responsible actors. The fact that I have plugged into this podcast so regularly since it first aired (and followed the Dispatch so intently too since it first came online) is a reflection of my own personal transformation on that front. You guys provide a valuable public service, and I share this podcast with my friends and colleagues regularly. Keep up the good work.
