Representative Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin makes a return appearance on this, the 200th episode of The Remnant. To celebrate, Jonah and Mike bring back the ever-popular theme of half-baked ideas, mixing many of their own ideas (that still need a bit more time in the oven) with some of our very own listener-submitted thoughts. They revisit their plan to (peacefully!) annex Greenland, Mike prolongs his beef with Rep. Dan Crenshaw, and our intrepid podcasters discover how to implement mortal combat into parliamentary procedure.

    I know this is late but slowly catching up on the podcast. Here's a half-baked idea for the future: design and develop a national water distribution system. There are parts of the country that have an abundance of water, and in fact the Great Lakes represent a substantial fresh water resource. Most of that water today dumps into the Gulf of Mexico, a lot into the Atlantic. On the other hand, the American SW and the Central Valley in CA (which produces a very large fraction of the fruit and vegetables consumed in the US as well as the export market) is under a historically long drought, which will only be exacerbated by climate change. So why not initiate a substantial infrastructure project to move water from the places with plenty to those with (chronic) want? The Israelis turned the Negev into a garden spot---why not the US? As a additional benefit, some of the water could be moved via canals, creating a very cheap and carbon friendly means for moving goods. I totally get the perhaps insuperable politics, but this would be a project of the same scope and benefit as the intercontinental railway and the interstate highway system.

    Great show, thanks! As always proud of my representative! If Gallagher, Walker and Ryan are all out of politics it will be a loss for the country. WI tried America. You chose Trump.

    This has been something I've noticed since the start of the COVID outbreak but I think you are operating under a bit of a misunderstanding with regards to wet markets. I lived in in China for a year (Suzhou and HK) so I have some but admittedly limited first hand knowledge of this. Its indisputably true that Chinese society has been a bad actor with regards to the killing and consumption of endangered species and there are a limited number of exotic wildlife markets around China including where it seems COVID spread from. However the concept of a wet market more generally in Asian society is basically akin to a bunch of small vendors selling a really broad range of predominantly food products. A lot of Chinese are rich enough to have fridges and be able to shop at Western style grocery stores (the Walmart in Suzhou was weirdly classy) but the upswing in fortunes for the Chinese people has been hugely unequal and a lot of people can't afford to shop at places like that. In addition food safety and food legitimacy has been a huge issue in China for years. For the same reason that Americans like going to Farmer's Markets and looking in the eye the man who grows my carrots, a lot of Chinese feel more comfortable buying meat and other food from an individual who they feel can be answerable to them rather than a giant grocery store who absolutely has CCP contacts. I know you aren't trying to misrepresent this issue out of malice so it might be more useful to be more accurate in your language. Not for the sake of "PC" but rather in General McPeak's words because "you want to hit what you are trying to hit, you want to do the damage you are trying to do."

    Great pod. Note USG pushed a partnership of democracies, or whatever it was called, when Albright was secstate. A fine idea, but a lot of our allies would seek to expel us! Canada idea is great. Would help us in Olympics...and politeness. Don’t like music. The original stuff you had when you started the Remnant was great and catchy. Why not go back to that?

    Brilliant show. Sorry I didn't get my mostly 1/4 baked ideas in on time. Rep. Gallagher's US Genome Survey idea was great. Johan's Letter of Marque for hackers...hmmm...how do I say this quietly...has sort of already been done.

    I'm sorry I missed submitting my half-baked idea. Taxis should have a governor that prevents them from being "sounded' more than 10 times in a hour. This would reduce the noise pollution in Manhattan. The governor should also be limited to a total amount of time in an hour. (The limit of 10 is an extreme as to why anyone should need to use their horn in an hour).

    Loved the podcast - great conversation between you and Rep. Gallagher.

    Not a big fan of the new intro "music", which sounded like a drumset riff, over-scored with a bunch of superfluous dialogue (I think?). Probably my personal preference against audio clips being used over music as intro (looking at you, Ricochet...), but it sounded disjointed, shallow, and not really resonant with the tone of the podcast. You should stick with a music intro - perhaps another selection from the suggestions that you received at the beginning of the podcast run?

    First, absolutely great podcast!

    Second, a note on one of your advertisements in this episode of the Remnant: using any VPN (including ExpressVPN, which I use and which is great) to spoof your location may violate the terms of use of Netflix and other streaming services. Just a fair warning.
