Will Congress Change How the Military Handles Sexual Assault?

Good Friday morning and happy October to everyone except the House of Representatives, where today is still technically considered Thursday, September 30.

Democratic leaders are seeking a deal with moderate Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema over how to proceed with President Joe Biden’s domestic agenda. The pressure is on, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has delayed a vote on the Senate-passed bipartisan infrastructure package for a second time but still hopes to take it up today.

The House Democratic Caucus is set to meet at 10:30 this morning.

House progressives are refusing to support the infrastructure package—which includes more than $500 billion in new spending for roads, bridges, airports, and broadband expansion—because they want to ensure their priorities, like new childcare and climate change provisions, become law. They are calling for Senate Democrats to advance a sweeping social investments package—or at least for a solid legislative framework for it to be in place—before they will support the separate bipartisan infrastructure bill.
