As a sophomore in HS my history class spent a semester with a copy of the American Constitution and the Great and Glorious Constitution of the USSR on our desks. Our task was to compare and contrast (as high schoolers are continuously instructed). To do this we had to have some historical knowledge of why the two systems developed as they did. The next semester we did European Socialism and its development. This was in the apex of the Cold War and there was little argument over which was the best. All the teachers were WW2 vets. This was probably the best class I ever had including the university (which is a sad reflection on university education) and I think today's young'uns are sorely in need of the same class. Hi Jonah! The currently most-used term that has replaced "retarded" is "intellectually disabled". I am familiar with this because one of my children has a rare genetic disorder, which causes intellectual disability, among other challenges.
I usually am somewhat curmudgeonly about changing terms for the sake of so-called political correctness. But the word "retarded" has become such an overwhelmingly negative one that I am happy to use a different word to describe my sweet little boy. :-)
