Today, we present the second part of Jonah’s conversation with Washington Post opinion columnist Megan McArdle. The punditry was just too rank, so their conversation became a two-episode-long saga. In addition to some COVID punditry, some women’s issues, and some libertoid-speak, they also reminisce on their shared old stomping ground, New York City, and how it has changed.

    Every time Jonah says "by definition," I imagine that one of the things is actually the definition of the other one. Literally.

    Although it was a brief aside, Megan is correct that tech work requires more than skill. The job necessitates a certain type of personality and disposition. This phenomenon is corroborated by my experience in the industry.

    Part 2 was better, met normal Remnant standard. One might even say it was lovely.

    Jonah, Enjoyed both Part 1 and 2. One suggestion, I recommend you put a time on the amount time you talked and your guest talked. In Part 2, I estimate, you 70%. your guest 30%.

    All this talk mainly by JG on this and the Wed TD pod about all the mentions of "ambition" in the Federalist Papers, which I've not studied at all, has me thinking about how the FF's conceived of "ambition."

    Did a quick Google search of quotes by 18th century novelists, and came up with this Daniel Defoe quote:

    "...mine was the middle state, or what might be called the upper station of low life, which he had found by long experience was the best state in the world, the most suited to human happiness, not exposed to the miseries of hardships, the labour and sufferings of the mechanick part of mankind, and not embarrassed with the pride, luxury, *ambition*, and envy of the upper part of mankind...not enraged with the passion of envy, or secret burning lust of *ambition* for great things…."

    I liked the conversation. However, I would like to caution against annualizing quarterly GDP growth numbers. Annualizing only makes sense if you expect roughly similar growth in the next three quaters. So unless you expect something like 9% negative growth for the next three quaters it is misuse of statistics.

    Sign me up now for a Zoom movie night! And don't forget The Seven-Ups, featuring lots of freeze frame fun of the old neighborhood. (Ex: the building on the north-west corner of Columbus Avenue and 77th Street was fully boarded up. I can't believe that was set design.)

    Can someone please post the article Ms. McArdle mentioned about when she realized that being a woman set her apart in tech because she did not spend her weekends tinkering? I think I recall reading it around the time it first appeared, but I didn't pay attention to the byline then.
