David Bahnsen, Jonah’s trusted economics guru, is back on the Remnant to provide some raw, unfiltered wonkery on the latest in financial disasters. From the debt ceiling deal to the persistence of inflation, no policy matter, however terrifying, can escape his wonky gaze.     Yes, I'm hyper-sensitive right now. I get the point of noting that the chief investment officer of The Bohnsen Group happens to be named Bohnsen, just as the person most associated with Lou Gehrig's disease happens to be named Lou Gehrig. What are the odds that some of your listeners might have family members in the final stages of ALS? Pretty high, actually.
    Not to worry. I'm no longer a regular listener anyway. Having endured your loquaciousness for years, I considered the redundant adverbs to be the last straw. Referring to Gehrig's misfortune as a "better accident", though, was incandescently stupid.

    Jonah, I really appreciated your asking David to explain the velocity of money in a way beginners can understand (can't remember exactly how you put it). For the first time, I got it. I'm signed up for his free online Economics course. I need to take it.

    As for running over an hour, that's fine with me. I look forward to the Remnant and treasure it.

    That quote from David’s epistemologist dad made me literally LOL. Though I don’t think it is true of every atheist, it describes a few I’ve interacted with—mostly the young, very online set who have replaced religious self-righteousness with a secular version of the same thing.

    Jonah, the Protestant version of the Catholic Integralists are the Christian Nationalists. We have a number of them get power in the local Republican party structures in Texas and they proceeded to purge all the Roman Catholics from positions of power and run candidates that were aligned with their views. It eventually led to the Republicans losing power in several of the large cities.

    They have some adherents in the Texas legislature - they introduced the bill to require every classroom in Texas public schools to have a large poster of the Ten Commandments if provided by an outside source.

    Thanks for this conversation, Jonah.

    Mr. Bahnsen is a unique intellect on so many levels. I don't agree with everything, but I would never dismiss any position out of hand. I just wish I had the time and intellect to do a deeper dive on many of his conclusions. His economics is really quite eclectic. He's a follower of Austrian Economics who doesn't particularly like gold and as we heard today has an outlier opinion on inflation and the Feds response. I read him on an almost daily basis but would welcome him on future Remnants to explore some of his areas of interest in more detail.

    Religion is one. I loved his comment attributed to his somewhat famous father "Atheists believe two things; they don't believe in God, and they hate God." It reminded me of a quote from Charles Krauthammer. It wasn't original to Mr. Krauthammer who could not remember where he heard it. When asked if he believed in God responded, "I don't believe in God, but I fear Him greatly."

    More of this please.

      Surely there are as many strands of atheist as there are of religious folk. But I must say that comment made me wince. It might be better stated that atheists don't believe in God, and hate religion. At least in my experience. Bahnsen's statement comes off as a mediocre understanding at best.

        You make a good point. I thought of Christopher Hitchens (who was a fairly aggressive atheist) when I heard the comment. But Hitch was more focused on religion than God.

        Bahnsen is an unabashed Christian. And that’s fine. I’m not but I do like to hear discussions about religion and personal beliefs.
