After hearing and reading David explain it several times, I finally understand the disagreement between Alito and Gorsuch. Amazing that all this uproar hangs on such a small crux.
I enjoyed the discussion on grammar; many of us have our pet peeves. I'm with Jonah on "fewer vs. less". I agree with Steve about "impact", which is just one example of the terrible sin of nouning verbs and verbing nouns. (Pause here for a long, deep groan) One of my pet peeves is the lack of awareness of gerunds. People build awkward phrasing by failing to use a possessive modifier for a gerund. There is an example of this in the Morning Dispatch section about John Bolton's book. The sentence reads "Impeachment passed without us hearing from him." It should be "Impeachment passed without our hearing from him." The old skill of diagramming sentences is a wonderful thing. You can see the diagram in your head. The gerund "hearing" is the object of the preposition "without". The proper pronoun to modify "hearing" is "our", not "us".
