    I don’t see either party having any real motivation to punish Trump. Republicans are afraid of their base and Democratic leadership know they can’t win in 2024 without Trump on the ballot. I hope enough has been done here to knock Trump off in the primaries.

    As for phone documents, who’s running IT over there? All those phones should be backed up - especially those with sensitive information.

    Has anyone on The Dispatch team given thought to an audio podcast version of TMD each morning? I think that could be something huge for exposure and let people get your reporting even if they don't have time to read. I'm just curious and would appreciate if you guys could give any feedback on that idea. I'm a loyal reader and just want to support in any way possible. Keep up the great work!

    Regarding Mike Pence avoiding mention of January 6th because he's trying to "thread the needle" of Republican primary voters: the problem is, what other things might he do to thread that needle?
    On January 6th he stood up and did the right thing one time (I say "one time" because he notably did not invoke the 25th amendment and instead personally - and illegally - directed the National guard to quell the insurrection). But he (and McCarthy, and McConnell, and Graham, etc etc) all thought at the time that the events of that day would forever tarnish Trump.
    Well if he refuses to be unequivocal about the situation, refuses to condemn Trump because he's hoping not to alienate Trumpist primary voters, *what else might he do for this purpose*?
    We find ourselves where we are because Republican after Republican made exactly this type of calculation for 5 years. It only stops when enough GOP primary voters refuse to go along with it. Why can't the Trumpists be the ones who have to hold their noses and vote for the Republican candidate in the general even though he doesn't tickle their fascism erogenous zones?

    Also, where is the discussion of the apparent fact that Pence took on the role of president on Jan6th without authority.

    While most appreciate that he did this, it was unlawful and shouldn’t the 25th amendment have been enacted prior to Pence giving orders?

    I am becoming more and more offended by the DOJ and what can only be interpreted as a different set of rules for presidents and presidential candidates and the rest of us under the law.

    Other than letting politics influence criminal investigations, what is the explanation?

    This thinking appears to be just accepted by pundits, with David and others glibly saying, “the least likely____ to prosecute a former president…. Why are the rules just accepted as being different?
