Fellow Dispatcher Declan Garvey joins Jonah on today’s program, wherein they discuss the parallels between the GOP’s current identity crisis and the last time that Americans witnessed a similar party realignment (the Whigs vs. Jacksonian Democrats). The guys discuss the prospects for a theoretically ascendant third party – “The people I spoke to said, ‘Yeah, I’d be happy to belong to a party that addressed my concerns even if I knew it might lose in the short term,’” says Declan – as well as early 2024 contenders and the validity of the “Red Dog Democrat” theory.

    Hi, I heard a reference in the podcast to Declan's discussion of Myanmar vs Burma in TMD. I must have missed it. Can you tell me which day to go back and read again to understand why the change to Burma in TMD?

    Trump's personality all but ensures a steadily diminishing number of followers. As soon as any daylight appears between Trump's butt and one of his minion's lips, the minion is rudely discarded. On the other hand, if the 1/6 riots didn't discourage his current followers, it's hard to imagine what would. But on the third hand (lurching into E.T. territory), one of Trump's few consistencies is his ability to continually up his crazy.

    The GOP is in a really, really bad place: it either spilts and becomes a rump party with no chance of regaining power, or principled Republicans will have to submit to the will of authoritarians (which will ultimately lead to the destruction of the party -or worse). As a forty-year Republican, I simply cannot throw in with neo-Brownshirts. And let’s not kid ourselves, that’s what Trumpists are.
