    I think something like the Romney proposal probably needs to happen. And it's not just about welfare for poor families. It's about middle class families and helping them out with the super high cost of living and raising families.

    It wasn't too long ago that a single blue collar wage earner could support his family with a middle class lifestyle. Now that's all but impossible.

    When my wife and I bought our first house, we were two college educated people, making together about $140k. Bought a 60 year old house in the cheap part of town in a cheap part of CA. Drove 15 year old cars, went tent camping for the occasional vacation and didn't eat out etc. And we were still barely getting buy and that's AFTER moving in with my parents for two years to be able to save up a down payment.

    Sure we have bigger cheaper TV's but in most of the rest of life cost of living is out of control.

    Romney's plan won't fix that problem, I'm not sure if anything will (though better zoning could help) . But we shouldn't miss the fact that it's not just poor families struggling.

    How is the government better equipped to promote any of the goods that Andy Smarick suggests than it is to promote child bearing in general? Common care? Robust non-profit safety nets? Our loving-kindness to our fellow humans?
    These are cultural things and the government is not well-equipped to promote them.

    I agree that there are higher goods than just check writing. But I don't think the government can actually promote those things, so they might as well write checks.
