A deadly police shooting in Paris last week sparked days of riots across the country. Pascal-Emmanuel Gobry, a fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, joins Dispatch Executive Editor Adam O’Neal to explain what led to the violence and where France will go from here.

    Very interesting. I did not realize that 'chain migration' had effectively been enshrined into the French Constitution. It sounded like it was done so through the courts, but maybe I misheard.

    I have no sympathy for the French. This is sooo much deeper than one incident. They brought this on themselves.

    And can we please stop with the MLK references? King only had a non violent vision because Malcom X was there to remind people of the "or else" as an alternative.

    In parallel with Gobry's comment about France, when the US Left, eg, NPR, says "American", they mean Whites. (There are other categories that are parallels, but I shan't mention them.)

    This is the first explainer that I think hasn't done its job of presenting a well informed view of the subject manner. I heard a description of a French ideal where French society understands itself to be colorblind but immigrants reject that vision. Blinkered, out-of-touch elites view social spending as a solution to the problem, but the real need is to restore order. And Macron would make himself the most popular politician in France if he would act to foreclose pathways to African immigration currently guaranteed by the Supreme Court. Is this an explainer or the presentation of a partisan viewpoint? The selection of Gobry to provide it, as several commenters below indicate, provides a similar indication of nuance and fact-central discussion of a complicated topic that selecting Tom Cotton or Stephen Miller to explain the border crisis might do.

    It's silly and tiresome to suggest that there's something inappropriate in parliament holding a silent observation for the action of a representative of that government carrying out his official duty but not for the action of an illegal immigrant.
    Both results are obviously terrible, but one could and does happen anywhere, any time, the other could only happen under authority of the French government, which thereby bears responsibility.
    Whether that action was performed appropriately is hardly even relevant.

      Yep. I tried to avoid too much judgment about how people behave on Twitter, but PEGobry was particularly sensational in a negative way. Just the fact that I remember his Twitter handle is a bad thing!
