    Other subscribers may disagree with me, but from my perspective, you don’t have to apologize for going over an hour. I love these Dispatch Live events, even if I can rarely make it and usually have to watch later. I’d happily watch a two-hour version.

    I have watched all of the hearings and they have been fascinating. I was most impressed with the individual testimonies. I do agree, they stand on their own. I could not listen to this podcast live but just finished it now. Excellent discussion! The Dispatch keeps me sane and gives me hope for humanity:)

    Just curious for your opinion of Gen. Milley appearing to admit to taking orders from VP Pence. I'm surprised this hasn't been scrutinized more for the implications for civil military relations going forward. I'd be interested if you are concerned by this revelation or is it understandable given the circumstances?

    If I were to identify the most effective part of the January 6 hearings so far, it would be the video testimonials because they are largely separated from the direct participation of the committee’s politicians (who are polarizing merely by their party ID). Thus, if I were a Jim Jordan type and on the committee, I would do everything possible to either prevent use of those in the first instance, discredit them by emphasizing that the participants are not appearing before the committee now, or doing whatever I can to distract from them (“old news,” “inflation!” “open borders”, etc. – whatever it takes) and as noted by other posters serve up reusable sound bites for right wing media.

    I would have no incentive to test the evidence by cross-examination because I’m not going to dominate or win that fight. Instead, I would not want to draw attention to the evidence at all and would do whatever I could to ensure the evidence is ignored or forgotten. In court, I may lose my case with this approach, but as this is a political – and not legal – proceeding, winning is defined differently, and is mainly making sure these hearings are simply a non-event with the public.

    If Rep. Jordan had been on the committee, as Rep. McCarthy wanted, there is zero chance he wouldn’t have been disruptive and sought sound bite moments for his appearances on Fox News. Those sound bites would have been shown without any wider context and presented as further evidence of why the committee is this or that and not worth watching.

    I feel like Jonah would have made this point if he had been on the feed tonight. This is one of his hobby horses.

    It isn’t as if Fox News prime time would have shown testimony of Officer Caroline Edwards and the entire video segment of her being brutally attacked if only Speaker Pelosi had agreed to allow Rep. Jordan on the committee.

    Both parties know how to employ poison pills. Rep. Jordan being put forth by McCarthy was an obvious poison pill. And Rep. Cheney likely objected to his presence on the committee as much as any Congressional Democrat.
