    My concern about ranked choice voting: How would major controversial issues that have a true ‘right answer’ have turned out.
    Moderate solutions to slavery, civil rights, bill of rights issues aren’t sufficient. It seems like treating a symptom rather than the cultural cause. I worry todays systemic change to get in the moment moderation might not be sufficient to hard questions requiring hard line answers in a moral direction later.

      Hi Jay -- I'm jealous! I hope you have a great trip.

      If you were headed to Madrid (or San Sebastian or Seville or Jerez or Alicante), I'd have a long list of places for you to try. I'm afraid my Barcelona knowledge is horribly outdated, however. The only two places I'd recommend are rather touristy, so far from a hidden gem. One stop to be sure to make is the main mercado on Las Ramblas. It's in every guide book and virtually everyone who's been to Barcelona would tell you the same thing, but it's worth a look. Then, at the end of Las Ramblas near the port is a restaurant called La Sedna. Again, it's pretty touristy, but we had a terrific meal there last time I was in Barcelona. Beyond that, I'd probably take my chances with little tapas places in the Gothic quarter. So many great little spots scattered throughout.

    What I would like to know is how would Jonah react to find out one of his friend's was dating his daughter? She is what, 19? What if he found out she was Leonardo DiCaprio's new girlfriend?

    I have dated both older and younger women. But my younger brother started dating a 32-year-old woman when he was 16 and she was 32. They became engaged when he was 21 and married when he was 22. They stayed married until she passed away of old age. Well natural causes anyway. But they were together for 30 years. I used to joke that in so many years I'd be old enough to date high school girls again. But I stopped telling that joke when I started working as a high school teacher. Continuing to tell that joke seemed like a bad idea. When I was 32, I didn't date any high school girls, but I did start dating a college senior. There had been a bit of a scandal in her family when a close married friend of her grandfather started an affair with his daughter (my girlfriend's aunt). The aunt got pregnant and the grandfather arranged a Catholic annulment so that his former friend could marry his daughter. I spent a great deal of time with her family and got to know her uncle a little bit. He was a very holier than thou type of Catholic that had seemingly pushed his sons to go into the priesthood. But he and his wife had lied to his children about the date of their marriage. Their daughter, conceived before their marriage, had been born before they could get married. So they lied, saying they had gotten married a year earlier than they had. Somehow I doubt that was my girlfriend's aunt's idea. Awesome guy her uncle and such a devout Catholic.

    Declan, You seemed very much in favor of ranked choice voting, so I have a question. Why wouldn’t you just use a system of runoffs, which is much less complicated and still ensures the winner got a majority of the vote? Thanks.

    And I believe Jonah is mistaken (if I understood him correctly): Gorbachev did in fact have his own citizens shot and run over by tanks for wanting to break their republics away from the USSR, among other places, in Riga, Tblisi, Alma-Ata...

    Unpopular opinion incoming: please stop with the “flagship podcast” thing. It’s not endearing. I like the mix of people on the Dispatch staff, but this little constant jabbing at each other seems to portray underlying tensions that your members don’t really need to be party to. JMHO.

      That’s not how I read the tone on that at all; to me, it’s clearly good-natured ribbing that none of them take offense at. I do think it’s funny that Steve’s assertion that this podcast is the flagship one is just not taken seriously by either Jonah or Sarah, and that is the correct response. It’s a very distant third. I think it’s pretty evident that these people are colleagues who actually respect and like each other and can handle a little teasing. Also, I loved the outtakes!

    If there were a compilation of all (or even just a large number) of clips of all the “niche podcast” and “flagship podcast” jibes, it would make for a hilarious episode or part of an episode, somethinhg that could run around New Year’s Day or Christmas. Steve’s “By the way, this IS the flagship podcast” would be a great clip to end the debate with.

    It would be real work to mine all that ore, but there are interns …
