Dispatch Live: Fox Settles with Dominion

In tonight’s Dispatch Live, Kevin, Steve, and Jonah will be breaking down Fox’s massive $787 million settlement with Dominion and what it means for the network and the country. Harvest will also join from Wilmington, Delaware, where she was covering the trial, and Esther will discuss the latest developments with the Pentagon leaks and Sudan’s recent violence.

    I really appreciated the interview with Esther at the end. Those were good and thoughtful questions and answers. There are so many crazy things going on in the world, and these kinds of tragedies often get buried by all the other news. It is nice to hear an interview that is more like "The Daily", which helps shed light on the human part of current events.

    On the lawsuit, a PBS interview mentioned that if Dominion had continued this, it would have been protracted where FOX would appeal, and even if Dominion overcame all of the shenanigans of Fox's shysters, often on appeals, they lower the settlement award. I guess there is the costly lawyering, but maybe this is the best that could be gotten. There is no come to Jesus moment at this point, and I never expected there would be, and the schadenfreude of shoving these clowns' noses into their own dog pooh is still not going to get that repentance.

    There is another lawsuit coming, which may at least double it.

    To some extent, I think some of the election officers who have been disparaged and defamed for doing their job should set up a class action lawsuit on this company. My mother used to work as an election officer when she was alive. I used to help her sometimes. She earned may $25 for two days work -- going down to the registrar of voters to get the balots the day before, checking that everything was in order at home, setting things up in the church the night before, being present the whole time during the election from 8 - 8, taking everything down, packing up the ballots, and bring them back to the registrar of voters office at the end of the day. The pay was not even $5/hr, and she was an officer. I would get $15 if I could help all day. It was just an unmitigated, grossly slanderous insult to people who dutifully serve for next to nothing.

    I really hope FOX and all these liars pay.

    well that was entirely disappointing - expected, with Kevin and Jonah on, some dark, big picture grousing - and nothing - because what this settlement tells me is that Fox just got slapped down hard for telling lies in service of a 'coup', and nothing's gonna change - each side's 'income streams' will continue to run on lies and bullshit narratives designed to appease and amuse fools so that come 2024 the vast majority of voters, short on time, brains and/or means, will have absolutely no clue what's actually going on and thus cast a vote in utter darkness - I'm not sure how at that point ya defend democracy - the 2024 election has sad and pathetic farce written all over it

    I particularly enjoyed the Sudan portion of this discussion. I understand that the Fox News stuff is the story of the moment, but I haven't watched cable news in at least 10 years, so it's not super relevant to me.

    Question for Harvest: Havey-cavey? Habie-cabie? Please explain. I'm stumped.

    I missed the first part of the program. I'll go back later and catch it. I am super disappointed that Dominion settled. Fox News needed to apologize and say that it had lied. Tucker ought to be great tonight, I won't be watching. You'll have to tell me tomorrow about that. This moved me firmly into the camp that Sullivan has to be revisited. Everybody on the show your show thinks that Fox lied and it was super damaging to the country. And now they get off free. The people who like this result are going to love AI.

    Will this force any change at all in how Fox does business? Is Dominion going after the even scuzzier elements like Newsmax?

      More is to come on the low-life characters, but it doesn't sound like there is much of any repentance from Fox at this point.

    I'm of two minds about this settlement. On the one hand, one never really knows what a jury will do, and the Sullivan standard is such a high bar. On the other hand, a full record of Fox's perfidy might actually change some minds (or at least be genuinely fascinating in the most awful way).

      It's probably the best outcome for Dominion, though. I don't think they'd regain much more reputation during a trial than they already have. More liquid might have been on the table, but 7x their operating budget is tough to pass up.
