Dispatch Live: On the Ground in Iowa and New Hampshire

The caucuses are upon us, and The Dispatch crew is coming at you live to cover the opening of the primary season. Steve Hayes and Sarah Isgur will interview Iowa guru and Republican strategist Dave Kochel about what’s next for candidates. Jonah Goldberg and Chris Stirewalt will pop in to cause disruptions. David Drucker and Andrew Egger will be reporting directly from frosty Iowa to talk about Ron DeSantis’ campaign and the evangelical vote. And looking ahead, Mike Warren will join us from New Hampshire.

Dispatch members are invited to submit questions in the comment section ahead of the event.

Unlike our regular Dispatch Live streams, this event will be open to the public: Feel free to invite friends and family looking for a Dispatch-ian alternative to cable news.

    BEST. DISPATCH LIVE. EVER.

    Mr. Goldberg, thank you for the splendid, cogent, concise, and correct set of arguments in favor of some sort of rotation of which states decide first. There are indeed alternatives in addition to, and other than, a single national primary! As long as states make their decisions over the course of a campaign season, through -- and there is much value in seeing candidates perform over a course of months, as they run a variety of gauntlets; we should keep the idea of a campaign season!-- there needs to be a less distorting way of ordering them. And we can maintain the current 50-state laboratory of democracy, in which states can and do experiment with how they pick political candidates.

    As several participants tonight acknowledged, Iowa and New Hampshire, in particular, seem to take a perverse delight in screwing with each other. Well, dammit, that means 48 other states are having two itty bitty ones, acting irrationally and being proud of it, wielding a disproportionate impact in presidential selection for absolutely NO GOOD REASON. I reject the suggestion that Iowans or New Hampshirites are intrinsically superior, morally or politically, so as to deserve that privilege!

    In fact, I suggest that in the new system, when this comes to the attention of the czar and is changed appropriately, Iowa and New Hampshire have to go LAST for the next three decades before they're even eligible for the (electoral-count or population-weighted?) lottery every four years, on January 7th, to decide which states get to be in Tranche 1, which in Tranche 2, etc., during the next cycle.

    The current set-up reminds me of Britain's "rotten boroughs" -- my objections are both practical (based on the distortions described by Mr. Goldberg) and ethical (based on, well, democracy).

      I was left with the impression that Mr. Williamson make be taking a family leave soon for an anticipated blessed event. But I didn't re-watch. And I'm not sure what the meaning was of the hand gesture it produced from Mr. Williamson, whom we know to never be at a loss for words, and therefore was making a choice to use a gesture. Mafia? Gang sign? Anti-Packers? I dunno.

        Then again, his last column I think it was the last one) mentioned that he is just finished writing a new book. That would bear a slight relation to a Blessed Event.

    NYT live coverage, 8pm. “It’s hard to estimate turnout, but Jacob Hall, a Sioux County representative running things here in Sioux Center, says it’s “good,” and the room does appear to be filling up and may need to open additional space, which would suggest more than 350 caucusgoers. He also said there were so many Democrats and independents registering as Republicans that they had run out of registration forms.”

    Iowa wanted to be first in the nation. Everyone is whining about the weather. One-third of the country is experiencing the same frozen garbage, but you don't hear that. There's an Avalanche game on the tube, and that's far more important to me than whatever happens in Iowa. Iowa might be first in the nation, but they have little impact on the rest of the nation. Wish the national media would realize that and stop the wall-to-wall coverage from funnel cakes to frozen caucusers.

    A majority of people who planned to participate in the Iowa Republican caucuses said they believe President Joe Biden wasn’t legitimately elected. According to AP VoteCast, 62% of respondents said Biden was not legitimately elected,

    That suggests Trump is gonna win bigger than I thought. I had him high 30%-low 40% range. Now plan to vote > those who actually vote. But this one surprised me.
