I recently listened to this podcast. Without debating whether assignations are legal, your discussion was missing an important consideration: what did we gain and what are the consequences that may follow? We don’t know if we stopped any military action; it may never existed or was just postponed. In this case, a passenger plane was shot down. I realize that the Iranians may have been inept, but I doubt that it would have occurred absent the assignation. And someone worse may take Suleimani’s place. Another example is the assignation of Reinhard Haydrich. Not only was the assignation team wiped out, thousand of civilians were killed in retaliation. And it did not stop the Holocaust. I believe that government sponsored assignations are not good policy. By the way, like you all, I have been a member of the NY bar for 42 years, but only practice for ten years.
