In a previously recorded (but never released) episode, David and Curtis tackle the particularly vexing challenge of justice when crimes are committed. For those who do not engage regularly with the criminal justice system, these questions can feel distant, or even irrelevant. But as we are reminded, God’s repeated calls for justice throughout the scriptures don’t give the Christian such an easy out.

    Really great podcast. You convey how there's so much pain caused by this aspect of American life, and how it can be extremely unfair and sometimes the punishment can be way excessive for the crime. Yet you keep a balance between justice and mercy (Micah 6:8). Thank you!

    My experience interacting with the criminal justice system convinced me it is more properly called a criminal administration system. I also learned that the entire thing is one giant machine designed to chew up humanity. Both prosecutors and defense lawyers are but opposing teeth in the maw of that beast. They work together against those unlucky enough to fall into it.

    I listened with great interest about the book Mrs. French co-authored about a family in Florida who demonstrated extreme compassion in forgiving the killer of their daughter. When David said he’d put a link to the book in the show notes, I immediately looked because I was pretty sure I knew the family involved; however, I didn’t know there was a book. Nothing in the show notes but a quick Google search came up with the family name: Grosmaire.

    I never met Kate Grosmaire, that I recall, but I did work with/for her husband, Andy, for almost 16 years (1993-2009). As a bureaucrat working in state government, Andy did not show the same level of compassion, or support, to his staff.

    David says the US has more incarcerations per capita than any other country in the world. This is true but lacks context. On the Remnant just this week, Jonah had a very good guest who addressed exactly this claim and provides important context:

    For the record I’m caught somewhere in the middle. I tend to be a libertarian and definitely not a “law and order” type, but I think the libertarians and the progressives ignore some important facts about crime and in some cases say things that aren’t true about the original theory behind Broken Windows policing.

    I’d like to end qualified immunity but I also think we need to take organized crime incredibly seriously. And just as prison has knock on societal effects, so does violent crime.
