Jonah’s in an uncharacteristically effulgent and ebullient mood on today’s Ruminant, but don’t let his high spirits trick you into expecting a less ranty and discombobulated episode than usual. Jonah kicks things off with some extended thoughts on the problems with small dollar donors, before shifting, somehow, into a discussion of the coalition instinct among human beings. If that sounds a little too cerebral, rest assured that the latter half of this episode provides nothing but unfiltered punditry on the ongoing Hunter Biden scandal, the latest Trump controversies, and the state of conservative commentary.

    An excellent “rant” as usual, well done! I’m astonished to recall that 15-20 years ago I often listened to Mark Levin, et al, and considered them rational. ( Hugh Hewitt remains semi-rational, to his credit.). If Trump wiggles out of every indictment and doesn’t get convicted of anything, and if he’s re-elected, would it be possible for Congress to impeach him for a 3rd time (and for the Senate to convict)? Can we even contemplate that as a final recourse? If so, that could motivate us in deciding how to vote for our 2024 congressional and Senate candidates.

      I once listened to Mark Levin as well. He started going off the rails during the Obama administration, then completely bought in to Trump after spending months explaining why Trump would be a disaster, much like his friend Rush Limbaugh.

    Just thought I'd make a minor point regarding Jonah's quite reasonable exasperation with those on the right who imply America is a totalitarian state and that Trump is being subjected to show trials akin to those in Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany. Were this so, he'd presumably be despatched to an Alaskan Gulag long ago - a characteristic of totalitarian states is a certain judicial efficiency, not endless legal wrangles (which have barely begun).

    The blame for this has two causes it seems to this Canadian is that (a) much of judiciary and prosecutorial service is politically appointed or elected; and, (b) Trump himself has howled on this topic non-stop for years now. It is scarcely surprising that some have taken up the cudgels accordingly. The first issue is simply the way it is and I think the only response is that many Republicans only get exercised about it when a Democrat is in office. The idiocy of this needs emphasizing. As for the second, it has been routinely commented on by many that Trump is being persecuted for alleged crimes (hasn't been found guilt yet!) in accordance with the law. A distinguishing feature of democracies, including, needless to add, the US is the proper application of the law and that without fear or favour with respect to the powerful or celebrities or candidates. Anyone engaged in the activities that have led to Trump's many indictments would also face indictments. This needs underlining more frequently.

    I will say that I find the inability of most of the Republican presidential field to note these points morally culpable, but that's just me. Indeed, the avoidance and mealy-mouthed exonerations of the Great Man is pathetic.

    I can't help but compare the Trump/Manhattan indictment to the Hunter case. I can't keep track of the number of articles I've read declaring the Bragg indictment is a waste of time, counter-productive, over-reach....because it was just shady bookkeeping by Trump - illegal, sure, but not bad enough to warrant a prosecution. Yet apparently Hunter's late tax payments & not being forthcoming about his drug use on a firearm application deserve a 5 year investigation by the top law enforcement officials in the DOJ.

    I understand the investigation into anything that might tie Joe into any illegal activity, but that isn't what the tax case or the gun case are about.

    I guess it seems a bit of a double standard around here when it comes to those specific cases.

    My comment is not about content. It is a plea to change your primary webpage such that Podcasts are identified as Podcasts and not simply included in the lineup of interesting (nay, fascinating) content on offer.

    It's not the waste of time I mind so much, when I click on a Podcast and then click away again (I prefer to read, not listen, to content) but the pang of disappointment.

    Perhaps someday you might do transcripts of at least The Remnant?

    So, I'm caught up on The Remnant and The Dispatch Podcasts, but it's been a busy few weeks, and I feel like I've missed something. Is there any episode where Jonah has address the Barbie movie?

    Reason I ask is that, while watching it, his recurring refrain that part of the purpose of civilization is to give meaning, purpose, and direction to men (lest we cause all sorts of problems) kept bouncing through my mind. I'm curious if he found that it resonated with his view on this matter, or not. Every generation is invaded by barbarians ... and we call those barbarians Ken.
