    Loved the episode (typical reaction of mine). Regarding Newt and the House realignment in the 1990s, it's important to remember a galvanizing event that year; the House bank/post office scandal. An easily grasped concept with voters, and able to be personalized - Stephen Solarz being a good example. Gingrich followed up with his Contract with America, and the rest is history. BTW - intro music is fine; nice new graphic.

    This episode of the Remnant was long, but worth it just for the Jonah rants. I’ve previously commented on the music. Sorry to say I still don’t care for it. It’s not music. I’m not sure what it is-perhaps a “remnant” from another composition? The barking dog, however, is a nice touch. As for the graphic, I like the black and white, but I miss the little “Jonah” in the middle.

    TBH, I found this episode hard to follow. Steve's answers didn't seem to match Jonah's questions. Perhaps Steve wanted to make particular points that are in his new book. I was so relieved when Jonah went into his rants. Bad news about the armadillo under the porch. I can hear the barking from here.

    If you or the person you're interviewing has a hard out, that's fine. If you have time limitations, I'm okay with that. But apologies for time throughout the podcast without an excuse seem weird. Joe Rogan pulls off four hour podcasts even though I don't care about his opinion. (He sometimes has good guests, and I think that would be a fun conversation for you.) In contrast, I have everything I know you're on set to go to the top of my feed and generally wish you'd go on longer. I just wish time wasn't wasted on apologies for time.

    I'm not sure if this was brought up in the discussion about primaries, but I believe if we're not going to do away with the primary system, then they should be completely closed to anyone who is not a registered member of the party. And I say this as a registered independent in a state with a closed primary. At the very least there should be no room for party crossover voting. Had only registered Republicans been allowed to vote in the 2016 primaries I'm not sure Trump would have gotten the nomination, as the bulk of his support came outside traditional Republicans, or at least that was where his most ardent supporters resided.

    Alligators, now armadillos, what about the traditional shark attack?

    You're only as good as your candidates. Better candidates lead to better outcomes. Are we really on board with the Republican Party leadership and their decision making skills?

    Obviously, the Democrats (Party leadership/establishment) were able to thwart Sanders in 2016/2020.

    It sort of brings it back to the whole electoral college argument, where it's more about outcome than process.

    About the old party alignment. You left out the civil war. It seems that up until the civil rights and voting rights acts in the 1960s, which party you were in somewhat matched which side you were on in the civil war.

    If you think we are tribal now, how about in 1860? What if the parties some of us grew up with were nothing more thsn remnants of that tribalism, slowly being undone by the northetn Democrats' embrace of civil rights?

    This person born in Mexico but naturalized American Citizen prefers the term American. Since I’m guessing this isn’t going to sweep the nation, i have an option that I would find acceptable. If we went from colored person to person of color (both are eaqually unacceptable to me), let’s start saying American of African/Asian/European/Latin descent! Start with what unifies us, then modify.

    One of the many reason I hate latino is that it excludes American, to me the most important part (vis-à-vis African-American, Asian-American, Irish-American, etc).

    Really enjoyed this podcast, especially the punditry about the upcoming election, and the discussion about the weakness of the party. I would be interested in a more in depth discussion about the future of the parties and what it would take for them to get there power back. I don't know a lot about armadillos, but I do recall a science show about how they carry the germ that causes leprosy. Yikes.
