    Should we eliminate the filibuster? No. The filibuster should force legislators to negotiate a better deal than a one-sided deal rammed through by shear force. For example, the ACA:
    Pelosi: “We have to vote on it to see what’s in it.”
    Obama: “Mitch, what are your thoughts on the ACA.”
    Mitch: “We have a few suggestions … (cut off in mid thought)“
    Obama: “Mitch, we won’t accept any changes; elections have consequences.”

    Should we "consider breaking the country apart?” No. French is correct and Jeff the SG should really think his scenario all the way through. Does anyone want to end up like Southeastern Europe? We’re not perfect but we both desire and are capable of continuous improvement. "United we stand; divided we fall."

      The ACA was a compromise bill in the first place. It was based on Romney's healthcare plan in Mass. and still couldn't get a single Republican to vote for it just like the Stimulus bill was 40% tax cuts and couldn't get a single Republican to vote for it. Nothing Democrats created would have gotten any Republicans to vote for it so what was the point of negotiating with them. At that point you're just negotiating with yourself.

    I listened to this yesterday, and though I’m usually too cheap to buy new books - the discussion of the apocalyptic novel portion of the book caught my attention so I found it at B&N today for reading next week while I sit in a cabin. Good job to you and Sarah on your podcasting, both in your duet Advisory Opinions podcast and the broader Dispatch podcast.

    Sarah, David, had to pause the video about 2/3 the way through just to tell you that this is delightful. Missed the live version due to family commitments, but this is my favorite dispatch live so far. Sara, loved the leprechaun analogy! May have to shamelessly use it (but attribute it appropriately of course).

    David, look forward to reading the book when it arrives. Had no idea about the middle third until hearing this, even more intrigued.
