Tonight, Sarah, Jonah, Steve and David gathered after the Vice Presidential debate to review the night’s proceedings. Watch to see why it reminded our panelists of 2012 all over again.

The team plans to convene another edition of Dispatch Live after the next presidential debate scheduled for October 15.

    Not gonna lie, (even if those on stage did), Pence did extremely well on stage.

    The old school GOP still knows a thing or two about steadying a message, which the way everyone has flailed in messaging this election cycle, Pence outshined Kamala, Trump, and Biden easily with that performance. It was not even close.

    Trump should just let Pence do all the interviews till Election Day. Not sure it will make a difference at this point, but yeah, Pence did good even if people don’t like him.

    Ditto on the observation that if the GOP Senators had done their duty, both the country and the party would be in a better place. But they fell into the pit they dug for themselves, and now there is really no one to blame but themselves.

    I might still vote for the down-ballot nominees in the GOP, but I am going to be scrutinizing them a lot more closely this go around, a thing that the mail-in ballot gives you time to do.

    David was the winner, for his observation that had the Republicans grown a collective set and voted to convict Trump on the charges (thin though they were) in the Articles of Impeachment, the country would be in a much better place. I agree with Jonah's evaluation of how off-putting soft spoken evangelicals can be. But having Pence at the helm for most of 2020 would have been a significant improvement over the current WH denizen.

    I also share Steve's dismay and puzzlement as to why Stacey Abrams was ever a consideration. And I'm no fan of KH.

    Sarah just made a great point. All of the Republican 2024 hopefuls, but Pence more than any, are walking the razor's edge of trying to please the hard core ever Trumpers while understanding the the core base of middle aged white men is not the future of the nation, and that they will have to regain voters turned off by Trump. Haley, Thune, Scott, but again Pence, need to understand that. So looking at the debate in that context was interesting.

    I don't think Pence's refusal to shut up within a reasonable time and talking over the moderator is exclusively a problem for female viewers. I'm a man, and I found it incredibly annoying. It was all the more irritating because 1) he would spend the first 3/4 of his allotted time talking about something other than what the question had been about, and 2) he had already made whatever point he was going to make and the excess blather was completely pointless.

    Really don't see it as a Pence win. He got in some relevant points and make Harris squirm regarding fracking and Green New Deal, but she made him squirm far more regarding Covid response and Trump's leadership overall. Moreover, her demeanor was far more effective than Pence's wooden performance.

    Jonah's question about Klobuchar at 30 minutes in, "Do you think Klobuchar would have done better than Harris...". Really interesting question/point. What if Klobuchar was on the ticket? I believe (as a MN resident, and living in the most conservative county at that) that if she were on the ticket, the election would be in the bag for Biden. Klobuchar was the one Pres candidate who called out Warren on the cost of her policies and was one of the more moderate candidates generally. Selecting Harris as the running mate, if Biden does somehow screw it up, could be viewed as the critical overreach. The Harris Senate voting record being to the LEFT of Sanders in 2019 is an incredible bit of trivia that pushes a cold/luke-warm Trump supporter pinch the nose and scratch in the Trump bubble on the ballot.

      I think the challenge with Klobuchar is one, the Minnesota/Floyd connection in her time as District Attorney, and two that the Left would have boycotted the ticket and plowed into the Green Party. Biden/Harris is a fairly classic cross-ideological ticket formula.

      Klobuchar/Sanders would have been the equivalent.

    Jonah's Oceans 11 reference - priceless - and remember that scene ends with Brad Pitt's character saying, and for God's sake, whatever you do, don't...and leaves!
    And yes, evangelical breathy voice is a thing, and really off putting IMHO
