    Christians are obligated to care for the earth. Therefore, it is contrary to our humanity to ignore the well being of the planet and all its inhabitants. That does mean we have to be chicken little every time a natural disaster occurs nor tie every catastrophe into a suspiciously radical agenda with ulterior motives such as climate change.

    We’re well past Thomas Malthus’ lifetime by some 200+ years and yet this discredited theory continues to pop up. There’s a book out titled Superabundance: The Story of Population Growth, Innovation, and Human Flourishing. It should be required reading for all Neomalthusians.

      What if we're not talking about Malthusian collapse? Maybe the discussion is more about the more quotidian impacts that affect other flora/fauna species and those impacts largely flying under the radar because recognizing them might suggest modifying behaviors that we'd rather not be bothered with. We're the apex species and we have a way of stomping on other species to get want we want. Seems anti-Christian to me, you know, self centeredness, acquisitiveness, pushing other living creations into extinction. Sure we flourish, but don't think there aren't ramifications.

    I grew up in a small town where the phrase "fishing in a stocked pond" was used to describe a situation where someone arranged the conditions of a contest or an endeavor in a way that made success inevitable. I have never read the book in question, but if the theme of this 1970s book is that overpopulation would generate resource scarcity so extreme that cannabalism would follow and if the people who write for magazines like Salon are now calling the book prophetic, Mr Goldberg is fishing in a stocked pond. I enjoy listening to Jonah use his sharp wit to roast self important idiots as much as the next person. However, at some point, I think it makes sense to say "that is so stupid that I will not waste my time making fun of it. It would be too easy. It would be like fishing at a commercial fishing farm (a stocked pond). I need a more worthy target for my sharp wit."
