Journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa have a new book coming out that is full of more scandals from the Trump era, most notably one involving Gen. Mark Milley possibly going around the chain of command in the final days of the Trump administration. Before that discussion, the gang discusses the legality and politics of the Biden administration’s vaccine mandate. Plus, a potpourri of topics pertaining to the GOP and what to make of the California recall election.

    Sarah is not the only one who noticed that in TMD! Haha, I’m not a prude but I had the same thought as her. Sarah is also totally right about the Woodward/Milley situation.

    Campaign finance with guest Sarah Isgur sounds like a good episode for the Remnant…

    Also, Jonah is totally on to something about AOC. I had the same thought before he said it. Part of the reason it played so well is she’s attractive and the dress is striking. That’s not being sexist. Attractiveness has played a role in politics at least since television, with the famous example being the Kennedy v. Nixon debate.

    Why didn't you address if this mandate would be effective at all? At 75% eligible people vaccinated how many of the 25% are activly employed by private business over 100 employees?

    “If we do attack, I’ll give you a head’s up.” That makes zero sense: to do so would be to put US troops in danger, which no military leader would do. That is, if an adversary’s military leader said this to you, you wouldn’t believe them; it’s just not a credible statement. Saying this would make the Chinese think they were being deceived and exacerbate the situation.

    Great conversation. Thank you

    General Milley and all ‘non-yes-men’ in the Trump Administration (including Mike Pence) were in a tough spot. Trump’s ridiculous behavior and ‘motor-mouth’ must have caused continuous consternation. That said, the suggestion that resignation or the 25th Amendment were better (moral?) options, makes the Generals actions suspect. So, on this issue, I am firmly ‘on the fence.’

    For a long time now, government, culture, etc. in California has been incomprehensible. So, what happens in California, stays in California, and there will be little, if any, effect anywhere else.

    Is there no stylebook at The Dispatch? No standing rule that would include (but presumably not be limited to) the "F-Bomb"?

    FWIW, I'm not offended. My dad was in the Navy in WW2, and I knew the meaning of FUBAR before I was in first grade. On the other hand, though, throughout the years of my own blogging, I avoided direct profanity and stuck to a pretty PG tone. How we speak in private, how we speak in company, and how we write for the internet need not all adhere to a single standard.

    With respect to censorship, Steve is too self conscious of his lack of oversight this morning when describing the CA GOP as a blank show. Clown shows are not that controversial (unless David advocates allowing them at a library).

    With respect to coverage of Trump, he is in Bill Simmons' "Tyson Zone" where anything is believable and thereby any reporting is hard to discount out of hand.

      Richard Nixon, for all his faults, was a far better human being and a far better statesman than Trump. But that's not saying much.

      I think of Nixon as a tragic figure. He had many qualities that could have made for a great president. Unfortunately those qualities shared a brain with his paranoia, his insecurity about his small-town California origins, and his willingness to fight dirty to the point of breaking the law.

        LBJ, Nixon and Bill Clinton were all tragic figures. Clinton had the fewest redeeming qualities.
