    The guy is likeable, better than the probable party nominees, and has the best campaign merch. When he talks about being tied with other candidates I nearly spit my drink out. All of the Dispatch subscribers are also tied with the bottom candidates if we round down to the nearest point and include error margin. Almost as bad of an answer as when I heard Asa Hutchinson say he wanted to finish 5th in Iowa and see what happens when Arkansas votes.

    From the debates, I thought Doug was the most intelligent and realistic of the bunch. But this interview left me feeling that while he was pretty good at diagnosing problems, he had few, if any, realistic solutions to address the problems he raised. And when candidates start most answers about how they are going to address an issue with some rambling dissertation on how everything Biden has done is awful, they lose my respect quickly. Once you are in office, criticizing Biden doesn't solve anything.

    Mr. Drucker did an outstanding job pushing him to answer the question or stating he didn't hear an answer. I wish the debate moderators were as skilled as Mr. Drucker.

      I can understand that and sympathize—admittedly its a low bar—but I can't understand why he's running. His support rounds to zero. His chances are zero. But he's still running. Why? To me, that kind of campaign smells like a grift. Even Ramasmarmy has a comprehensible plan to win the nomination: "Be on the ballot as Trump Lite in case Trump himself dies." It's a gross plan, meretricious and cynical, and it won't work, but it's a plan. What's Bergum's?

    This was a great discussion. I detest Trump. But I know enough people who thought Trump was their guy and are now looking for a good alternative, someone who has not written off Trump’s base. I think the Governor put some daylight between himself and Trump by emphasizing the need to look towards the future, without grievances or name-calling. And those in Trump’s base need to be recognized and respected for their concerns and loyalty, and they need a good and face-saving alternative to the former President.

    This was a fun and informative podcast interview to listen to! I hope y'all keep it up per usual. The Governor is clearly an intelligent, hardworking, and honest (within normal-political-puffery standards).

    And that's why he's doomed in the 2024 GOP primary, unfortunately. Too much sautéed spinach, not enough stepped-on heroin.

    I'm late to the party - two short comments.

    One, Burgum is indicative of the talent on offer this primary season and yet is going nowhere due to the Trump Cult effect. At the least this represents a sliver of optimism for tomorrow.

    Two, Burgum knows this but he didn't say it. America does not rule the world, nor does every independent actor on the world assess things through an American prism. All have agency that often has nothing to do with America - actions are taken for their reasons and American reaction be damned. And, of course, America lacks the power to do much about these things as experience on issue after issue tells us. The criticality of mustering support with allies and working much closer and more collaboratively with those allies is essential to further the agenda of our philosophies, forms of government, governance and application of hard power. Success and progress will be uneven and setbacks routine. It is just the way it is.

    He had me...until he just couldn't bring himself to criticize Donald Trump. I know why, but he had previously spoke of how honest he was.

      Not to mention—he likes to act like he's smart and pragmatic but waffling on Trump is dumb. Trump supporters are not going to vote for him and people he can reach aren't going to be put off by criticism of Trump.
