    Jonah, Jonah, Jonah you missed the point entirely. All your material about being motivated by religion but needing a good argument to make in the public square is, simply, a waste of your time. Why? Because too many Christians rely on the authority, from their interpretation, upon The Bible. If the bible says it, it's true or right....Full Stop. The mere assertion of Biblical support automatically denies the need for logic, or taking a well-supported sociological, psychological, or other empirical evidence. That's the problem of trying to discuss issues with many (mostly Evangelical) Christians. No other authority is necessary.

    "Kyiv" is the name of the city in the Ukrainian language, "Kiev" is the name in Russian. It's an issue with Ukrainians because of the unlimited attack Russians have waged on the Ukrainian language for at least 150 years. Many Russians, to this day, including their current leader, deny the existence of Ukrainian both as a people and as a nation. In the late 19th century, it was illegal to print the Bible in the Ukrainian language. The Soviet Ukrainian intelligence was liquidated under Stalin. Students could not go to university in Ukrainian; too burdensome to print textbooks in another language, the Soviets claimed. Even Communists that supported the existence of a Ukrainian identity were suppressed. Things Ukrainian in everyday life were suppressed, apart from the occasional choir or folk dance group. Books in the Ukrainian language were burnt by Russians as recently as, well, today. Even the Russian Nobel laureate Joseph Brodsky, even after being exiled from his native country, wrote and recited a poem against the existence of Ukrainians so scandalous and ugly that even he never dared to publish it. Russia has always used the Russian language as a weapon against the neighboring peoples it has conquered. You can understand Putin's current war against Ukraine only in this context. This is why he attacked another sovereign state, against all logic. This is why Ukrainians are being massacred in towns that Russian troops have held. This is why Ukrainians, whatever language they speak, whatever faith they hold, are fighting.

    It should not be a surprise that Ukrainians seek to call things by their proper name -- in Ukrainian. We should do so as well.

    I don’t get it. I see a few posts from you on Facebook, and there are always a group of people complaining that you’ve switched sides or are horrible because you don’t support Trump and/or the Republican Party. I come here, and I see the exact opposite. For me you are an interesting, thought provoking independent. I always learn something, and I especially appreciate how you use history to support your ideas.

    Also, the way individuals speak has a huge impact on our perceptions. I’ve said before that my mom was from Virginia, and she always complained that movies loved to use Southern accents to depict ignorance and lack of education. They still do it.

    I love me some ranty ruminant! Nothing like it being time for the solo show with Jonah “in a mood”. I am only sorry we missed the original 20 minutes. With due respect to folks at NR, is there still any respectable argument left in defense of the immigration restrictions? Is there any reason to believe Hispanics and Asians are not assimilating like other earlier generations of immigrants? We know have runaway inflation which is due in part to a labor shortage. How much worse does the labor shortage have to get before the restrictionist acknowledge the error of their ways? I don’t think its based on racism but at this point, don’t the immigration restrictionists owe the rest of us some explanation for their intransigence on this issue. We should be expanding immigration, not narrowing it.

      I don’t think most people are necessarily against expanding immigration. The big concern is illegal immigration. We do need to keep track of who’s coming in, no matter where they’re coming from.

        I agree we should do more to stop the flow of illegal immigration. But I don't see the restrictionists suggesting in return for more border security, they would support additional legal immigration. If I missed it, would love to see who is making that case.

          I think it’s been said more than once on The Dispatch podcast (or one of them). I listen to Commentary, and I believe I’ve heard it there, as well. Also National Review. I’d have to search to give you exact references, and sorry, but I’m not doing that. I definitely know Jonah has brought this up more than once.

          We need immigrants, but what I find so troubling about our southern boarders is the people who exploit the situation. And as Jonah has pointed out, how is it fair to the people who have followed the rules.

            Every comprehensive immigration legislation has these two components: 1) additional border security and 2) legal status for the “11 million” population of undocumented immigrants. I use air quotes because the number is just an estimate—no one knows exactly what the population is. The last time this was proposed was in 2014. In that bill, the proponents of the bill agreed to an additional $40 billion annually in border security including a “smart wall” on the southern border. The restrictionists demagogued the bill and killed it. This includes the folks at NR. By any objective standard, they were wrong! If we had passed that bill, we would have benefited in two ways: 1) the additional border security and 2) the additional immigration. At some point, the restrictionists ought to admit they were wrong. Not about the border security but about how additional immigration would help or harm the country. As we can see today, we need the additional workers. Do you disagree?

    Apologies for saying something obvious, but since Jonah brought it up, it is worth mentioning that Hulu's Under the Banner of Heaven is not an accurate source for learning about the history, beliefs, practice, or culture of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (also colloquially known as Mormons).

    Thank you for underlining the fact one doesn't need to be religiously motivated in order to oppose abortion, as well as for defending the legitimacy of religious motivation as an underlying driver of policy proposals as long as one can make rational arguments in their defense.
