After a rough holiday period of cat sitting, spontaneous transatlantic escapades, and glam rock urban invasions, Jonah and Guy have finally found a quiet moment to record another AMA, with predictably varied results. Topics this time around include the use and abuse of the term “neoliberal,” how Jonah stays on top of the news in a frenzied media climate, and what devoted members of The Remnant can do to bring about change.     I'm a bit late saying this.

    But that disjointed, rambling, hesitant definition of the term "neoliberal" was *extremely* helpful to me in understanding just precisely what it was, what exactly the "neoliberal shill" contest would be contemplating, and the nature of the curious responses to it across the spectrum.

    That Q&A absolutely was not a waste for taking on that question and addressing it, but in fact was one of the most enjoyable ones you've done in ages -- since the one where you actually answered *my* question, for sure. ;-)

    This may not be a popular opinion, but I think you should ditch the “no you won’t this is a podcast” bit. It is fun and all, but it sounds like it is more pain than it is worth. Mostly when I hear it I just feel bad for you having to set it up with guests. Maybe just play a recording of Jack or something like that.

    Just to say I really enjoyed this episode! I had an hour ish where I planned to stroll in the dark, and this was a nice conversation to listen to while I did. And cat content is never bad :)

    Jonah,

    I know you get self-conscious about the Ruminants and AMAs, but they’re my favorite episodes. I don’t think anything needs to change in them.

    I would like to hear you spell out your thoughts more on the term “neocon.” It feels like one of those things that you talk about your “well known feelings” on the term and the problems with how people use it…but then never really say what your thoughts are but just assume everyone knows what you’re talking about because you’ve talked about it so much before.

    I’m sure you’ve written about it before, but perhaps it’s been some time, because I’m very curious as to what those thoughts of yours are. It was a few weeks ago where you mentioned something about people not understanding or misusing what it means to be a neocon on domestic issues. I recently finished (or as close as I’m going to get to finishing) Continetti’s “The Right” and then have been reading some Irving Kristol essays, so it’s on my mind and I would very much like to hear you expound on neoconservatism.

    It's a short number of AMAs to judge by, but I've enjoyed both so far.

    But I'm also one of the people who count the Ruminant as my favorite podcast episode each week (and I mean out of all the podcasts I have on subscription, just just the Dispatch ones).Respectfully, to Guy and TFJ, y'all are wrong.

    I think this one did a good job of mixing up the "off-the-cuff" questions and giving Jonah some that required a little prep.

    You did not mention the Wall Street Journal among the publications you read. If this was an oversight I think you should correct it. If you have some objection to WSJ I would really like to know what it is you find objectionable.

      Oh that was just an oversight. I read the Journal often. I wasn't always a big fan of how the editorial page handled the Trump era, but I think there's an enormous amount of talent there, on both the news and editorial side.

    Interesting if at times wonky.
    You should know that TFJ is spot on correct about the desirability of having a GSD. A Malinois, not so much (there's a reason they're nicknamed Maligators).

      The breeding of the dog can have a lot to do with it as well. We've got a GSD from a working line. She was adopted to us as a family pet because she lacked the assertive temperament needed to be a police or bomb-sniffing dog like her siblings (she could maybe cut it as as meter maid dog. Maybe.) Still, the temperament she had was still an order of magnitude more challenging than GSD lines bred to be show dogs or family pets. Smart, extremely trainable *once you've convinced her you're the boss.*

        We had a police dog school drop out as well, sweet GSD male who just died last summer at almost age 14

      Yeah you need to be fully on board with Malinois socialization and full time training (see Border Collie). Otherwise they are likely to give themselves jobs like murdering the neighbors, killing the cat, or invading low-lying countries in Europe. GSD are a safer bet if you just want a family pet.
