It all comes down to this for Rep. Liz Cheney. Pundits largely believe Cheney can’t pull off winning her primary Tuesday in Wyoming against a Trump-backed challenger. But, is that true? Sarah hosts this week’s Dispatch Live with David and Andrew. Plus, Steve joins from Cheney’s headquarters in Jackson, Wyoming. Also, what are the latest developments from the FBI search at Mar-a-Lago? The crew will break it all down and, of course, leave plenty of time for your questions.

    Sarah,
    Can you talk about how Trump killing the small dollar donor list through inundation also effects getting out the vote? You’ve mentioned before that the small dollar donor’s money is only of secondary importance because what a small dollar donor does is lock in a voter who is now invested in the campaign. How much are unsubscribes effecting not just cash flow, but also voter turnout?

    Please add a sound effect, like the ominous Woodrow Wilson music on the Remnant.
    On all Dispatch podcasts, an upset clucking chicken, every time it is mentioned that Trump says he isn't debating.
    Please encourage other media outlets to do the same.
    Please mention it often, at least once per pod.

    Had Jonah been part of the crew this evening, he would have told you the word David needed to describe Michael Scott in 'The Office' episode he referenced is Fremdschämen – to feel ashamed about something someone else has done; to be embarrassed because someone else has embarrassed themselves (and doesn't notice). I recall Jonah used that in an article a couple years back and I made note of it because it's a cool word.

    With Dispatch characterization of IRS audits as being intrusive (not arguing that), demanding proof of claims on returns as assuming guilt first (Jonah), and auditing returns based on credits claimed as dragnet (David), I am wondering what is the best way for the IRS to enforce the tax laws created by Congress?

      Technically the IRS should be supplied all the information needed for taxes by companies and financial institutions. With that being the case the best way I see this happening is for the IRS to send a bill and then if you have a dispute with the bill you would then file paperwork along with documentation to support your case. Thus most tax payers would not need to complete anything and those with issues would be supplying documents to the IRS on why they calculated something wrong.

        I think that the Free File Alliance is the biggest corruption of our current tax filing system. Millions would not have to file as you describe if not for this deal by software providers that the IRS will not provide free filing as long as software has free options. Returns would still be needed for things that aren't pre reported to the IRS like deductions and self employment income. Instead millions of the simplest filers are currently spending money and time on returns they shouldn't have to because the Free File Alliance.

    Cross posting a question from Friday's Dispatch podcast regarding the discussion on IRS audits: is there a case to be made that randomly selected audits with the assumption of guilt constitute an unreasonable search and are therefore unconstitutional?

    Discussion topic for tonight, assuming it has not already been discussed on a podcast (I’m not a consistent podcast listener – transcripts please – even if they are only a partial “greatest hits” summary that I can use to prioritize my listening time).

    ..... I’m curious what the group thinks about the idea of Biden proposing being open to a preemptive pardon for any classified document charges. He could acknowledge Hillary’s transgressions and try to offer a “mulligan” to T as a way of getting back to normal without letting him off the hook for bigger offenses.

    It seems to me (with admittedly zero thought or legal knowledge) it would be a good way to deflate some of the MAGA bluster and allow him to be seen as a uniter, while actually doing what most presidents like to do best – talk big; do nothing 🙂.

      I saw an article suggesting this "compromise" on Politico, but I found it quite silly. I don't think Biden pardoning Trump for this particular crime would win over any MAGAs, since they are already fired up from the search itself, even though Trump hasn't actually been charged with any crimes so far.

      I also think the progressives who actually see Biden as a weakling who can't actually stand up to Trump or the GOP in general, would also revolt if Biden were to pardon Trump for anything, even a hypothetical jaywalking citation.

        I was thinking that a “confidential document criminal truce” could be a way to lower the temperature while acknowledging both H/T were in the wrong. i.e., the law is the law and needs to be followed, but let’s move on from that and stop targeting FBI/DOJ officials for doing their job. As you point out, I don’t see an obvious direct political payoff for either side (because both sides seem to be captives to their extremes).

        Where I see the most potential benefit is taking his “victimization” argument down a notch by making clear that any prosecution will be reserved for larger crimes. Of course, it won’t have any impact on the true MAGAs who want the talking point, but maybe it would gain some traction with independents and formerly sane Rs.

        The legal aspect is also interesting because it would be the start of/acknowledgment of a privileged class of lawbreakers agreeing to let themselves off the hook which happens now, just not formally; not that a protected class is a good thing. But bringing it out in the open would allow for lawmakers and voters to express more formal opinions (though with today’s level of seriousness and civility, those judgements would probably not be very helpful).

        In the end, I think there is a minuscule chance Biden would do it, just an interesting hypothetical. 😁

    Liz Cheney's net worth has increased 600% while she has been in office. If you think that has nothing to do with her support of the swampy political establishment, I have some swampland in Wyoming I would like to sell to you.
