Thanks David for this interesting podcast. Do you know if there is a list anywhere of public universities that do not practice this type of speech monitoring, and allow for a more robust exchange of ideas on campus? Religious private universities are usually more open this way-but many families can't afford them or there isn't the program that the student wants-hence public is the only real option practically speaking. David had an interesting juxtaposition of ideas in this great podcast. He noted that interpersonal conflict (particularly on campus) needs to be settled between the involved parties, rather than with an appeal to authority. The former allows for discovery of misunderstanding and learning. Quite correct (and adult). Shortly thereafter, he introduces the Marcuse movement of repressive tolerance to silence the majority in conflict. Many progressives undoubtedly have a genuine wont for tolerance and understanding. For a non-trivial proportion of others, however, I suspect that this is little more than a chance to exercise power and authority. Thus, the engagement between private parties to resolve differences is unacceptable. Thus, ideology aside, the thrill and head-rush of being part of the rapid response diversity squad. It's fun making people dance (at least to some).
