    If I understand Sarah correctly, the relatives of politicians should not do what’s in their own best legal interest and what one could reasonably believe was the advice of their counsel if it doesn’t align with their parents’ stated political goals.

    Should liberals utilize tax deductions of which they would support repeal? Should conservatives accept entitlements they want reduced or abolished? The Tea Party sign from days gone by that demanded the government keep its filthy hands off their social security comes to mind.

    I could understand a purist argument supporting all 3 of these positions, but not one that a person who has met people would believe could happen at a relevant level in reality.

    So, Sarah appears to be critical of any efforts to exert political influence on the judicial process. However, she is even more critical of Democrat politicians in the Hunter Biden case because they did not interfere in the plea bargain so as to extract a greater penalty for his gun offense.

    Regarding the submersible, the decisions of the grown men are one thing, but the 19-year-old college student was reported by his aunt to be terrified to go. Confusingly, the vessel seems to have been considered both experimental and devoid of proper certification, and yet also commercial and willing to have a 19-year-old join them at the same time.
    One wishes those in charge of safety for this submersible had respected the power of the sea enough to follow the ample safety warnings they had been given.

    Consistent with Ms. Isgur's commendable rule that intrastate squabbles amongst Texans ought stop at the Red River's edge:

    I will refuse, as a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and its School of Law — and (more pointedly) an alumnus of its Longhorn Band, from which privileged position in Kyle Field's lower stands I watched Earl Campbell run around, over, and through (but mostly over) the Texas Aggies for a college-career-high 222 yards during his Heisman season of 1977 — to hold against Congressman Hurd his student body presidency of the aforesaid Aggies.

    To the contrary, I wish him much luck. And in particular I enjoin him, as regards Donald Trump and the criminal risks he's posed to American national security, as viewed by someone with Congressman Hurd's background: Gig 'em, Will.

    The submersible accident hits home for me in a number of ways. I work in product safety; I'm one of the guys who has to sign off on something being safe and bear responsibility if it proves unsafe. I feel terrible for the executive who the submersible company fired in 2018 because he insisted they needed to do additional testing on the hull and go through a formal classification exercise before he'd sign off on allowing passengers on board. He's just been vindicated in a horrible way, but he's also got to grapple with the fact that he failed to do his job of getting the company to do the right thing, even though he doesn't bear ultimate responsibility for the subsequent bad decisions.
    The other part that sets my hair on end was the fact that the company argued their technology was too novel for the classification agencies to deal with, that it was going to be too arduous to get them to sign off, and it wasn't really necessary anyway. I hear griping like that all the time from some engineers, and I have to set them straight. If your technology and product are safe, then you should be able to prove that they're safe. I've worked with both the DNV and Lloyd's Shipping agencies on hydrogen ship projects (hey - novel technology they don't have much experience with!), and I've found them to be fair and reasonable, but they're not just going to take your word for it. In the safety world, a common saying is "In God we trust. All others bring data."

    Here's a thought on the GOP contest and why that candidates might think this time might be different than 2016.

    What if Trump actually gets convicted and serves jail time. That could totally change the race, and "might" be why the candidates aren't playing to win yet. They are hoping the judicial system takes him out.

    Of course these hopes have failed before (see impeachment 1 and 2)

      Elizabeth Holmes (Theranos) was indicted in 2018. She just went to prison a few weeks ago. It's highly unlikely that Trump will be locked up before the election
