NBC’s Steve Kornacki saw his star shine a little brighter on November 3rd, 2020 and the succeeding weeks as he walked Americans through the results of a long, arduous, and oftentimes confusing election. But Kornacki has been providing that kind of astute analysis for a long time, and he’s bringing it to this episode of The Hangover to discuss how our changing electorate has contributed to the sense of political chaos from the 90s until now. In a political culture where polling seems less and less accurate, and where the weak parties contribute to strong partisanship, how can the GOP claw its way back to a sensible-but-popular agenda?

    This episode was fabulous. Kornacki Cam (the camera trained on Steve doing his thing even during commercials) was one of the only things that made me smile during the awful and long days of November 3-7, 2020. What a great conversation between two knowledgeable, curious, and humble guys. I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the interview. Thank you!

    These podcasts have been so interesting. Diving deep into the last 20 or so years of Republican history has been so helpful to me in my quest to answer "how in the heck did we end up here?" Hindsight in always 20/20 and there are interesting ways to interpret what "shoulda/coulda/woulda" happened. There is so much of this I had forgotten about or just wasn't paying attention to at the time for one reason or another. Listening to Chris and all of his guests has been enlightening but also sobering as it definitely bring in to sharp focus the dumpster fire that is the Republican Party.

    Excellent. Makes me want to go get the guys book which I never would have thought of before or even heard of before.
    I am a burb dweller. I have been so my entire life except for the university years. Burb people are builders. They save for their kids college. They watch their IRA's and retirement funds. They keep a watch on the schools. What's up with healthcare insurance costs? Don't let the addicts come into our turf like the cities close by. If the schools diverge from college prep we hate it. We vote for stability. We vote for economic expansion. We do not vote for chaos be it either at the border, or the cities, or some lunatics crashing the Capitol. We are the swing voters and we pretty much do not like either the Dem or GOP in their current form.

    Great series. My urgent suggestion: devote a broadcast to Limbaugh and Ailes. You cannot dissect anything about Repubs 1990-2020 without exploring the significance of them.

      That's a great idea. I think a good guest for that subject would be Brian Rosenwald at Penn. He wrote a book called "Talk Radio's America."

    It's not my podcast, and for that we can all be thankful. But....

    If I were part of this conversation, I would have pushed back on what seemed to be the assumption that any other conventional Republican nominee would have lost to Hillary Clinton.

    Theory 1: Trump was the only one who could have beaten Hillary Clinton.
    Theory 2: Hillary Clinton is the only one who could have lost to Trump.

    In support of Theory 2, I offer the performance of Bernie Sanders in the 2016 Democratic primaries. It was strong mostly because he represented the only alternative to the candidate with the highest negatives ever seen (up to that time).
