Dear Dispatch Members,

We were so glad to see so many of you participate in our inaugural Monthly Mailbag with Harvest Prude last month. If you missed it, you can read it here. 

The calendar has turned, and this month Declan Garvey has agreed to answer your questions. 

Declan is the editor of The Morning Dispatch, our morning newsletter that condenses all the news you need to know to start your day into one convenient email. When he’s not staying up til 3 a.m. putting the finishing touches on TMD, he’s probably watching the Cubs limp to the end of a second consecutive losing season.

    I believe that Biden and Putin met back when Biden was Vice President and Putin was Prime Minister. Did Putin tell Biden anything that might help us in understanding his true purpose and what he is willing to sacrifice to attain it?

    Politico published an article about the NRSC withdrawing millions of dollars from competitive Senate races and a Comms director at the NRSC posted on Twitter that the story was an innacurate misrepresentation of what happened. I know that Politico story made the rounds on the Dispatch but was there any truth to what that NRSC Comms director was saying? Is there more to the story?

    First thing every morning I read TMD, Politico’s Playbook, and The Hill’s Morning Report - all of which typically arrive in my in-box within 15 minutes of each other. Sometimes TMD gets in first; sometimes it’s one of the others. So, do you guys check each other out and maybe have a bit of competitive race to see who gets their report on-line first?

    1. As a former beneficiary of one, will The Dispatch be offering another round of free subscriptions to current students and/or other means of encouraging good media consumption among young thinkers? (I really love the variety of perspectives here in the comments, but that's the kind of thing that has to be cultivated. This is not necessarily a push to give away TD content, but a request to see if there are plans to reach out to younger people.)

    2. What is the editorial process here at The Dispatch? How does an article make its way around the office, from idea in head to email in subscriber inbox?

    Declan, as I was watching Cassidy Hutchinson testify at the January 6th hearings, I was reminded again that while those who hold power in Washington are seasoned old hands, much of the work behind the scenes is done by nameless twenty-somethings. Recent Dispatch Lives and these monthly mailbags have alerted me that similar dynamics may be at play in The Dispatch. To me, Steve, Jonah, and David are institutions; I have been following their work and careers since my early days of political consciousness in the George W. Bush administration. Can you shed any light cross-generational dynamics at work in The Dispatch? To you, does this endeavor feel like you are helping create something timely and new or are you providing fresh energy to resurrect something “classic” in the vein of The Weekly Standard or early work of William F. Buckley, Jr.? Also what is the most “Okay, Boomer” moment you have had since coming to The Dispatch?
