As regular readers know, when I want to challenge myself I try to imagine a happy outcome to literally anything.

With great wisdom comes remorseless pessimism. It’s a cross I must bear.

But it’s not fair to ask you to bear it with me day in and day out. So today let’s depart from the same-old same-old and do something uncharacteristic. Let’s think happy, hopeful thoughts.

Let’s think about Donald Trump getting annihilated in next fall’s election.

    If it's true that " . . . most Americans have not, in fact, lost their moral bearings", then why is he neck and neck in the polls?

    Can anyone explain?

    You are correct and incorrect. You are correct that it will be a Democratic blowout if Trump is the Republican nominee. I say north of 400 EC votes.

    However, Biden will not be the Democratic nominee. Between the period after the completion of the primary and the convention the D party will come together to replace him as the nominee with a consensus candidate.

    Speaking of Trump insanity, I'd like to see TD look at the claim that some website or social media outlet has published the names and addresses of the Grand Jury who indicted Trump in GA, and some have received death threats. If this is true, as the County Sheriff alleges, there must be severe repercussions.

      As I understand it, Georgia law requires the Grand Jury's identities be revealed once they are no longer empaneled. I haven't looked for the statute,though, so that could be erroneous.

        Apparently you are correct. Most states protect Grand Jury info, including names.

    If interest rates continue to be high well into next year, things will start to break in the economy which could really hurt Biden’s re-election.

      No they won't. Interest rates have been kept unnaturally low for years. It finally makes sense to save money again. Why do you want artificially cheap money?

        The problem is interest rates have to be much higher to clamp down on inflation down to 2 percent which is the fed’s target. How many people can afford a mortgage with double digit interest rates? We had interest rates like that in the 1980’s but the government and people have so much more debt than they did back then.

    There has already been Trump inspired violence, we were just lucky that it was headed off by law enforcement before it could happen. More needs to be made of this in the media, along with pumping up his unhinged social media rants. Trump is benefiting from the fact that nobody pays attention to post-Truth social so his most insane ravings are not magnified to the national audience and stay within the political eco-system. I don't know if this is a plan to not fatigue people by showing his mental devolution nightly, or if your conspiracy-minded, to not interrupt his coronation by the GOP. His posts are nuts and are only getting worse as things go further south and out of his control and would provide an accurate counter to the publicity a sitting president gets when he trips on a sandbag some idiot didn't remove from a stage. If the coverage is equal, there is a decent chance of a convincing win (blowouts are just not happening in this environment).

    There may not be much going on right now, but Trump is going to be neck-deep in multiple legal proceedings in 2024, and all the new evidence and revelations are going kill his candidacy.
    A good GOP candidate will have the imagination to communicate all these upcoming troubles and persuade the party in a different direction, but I don't know if we have that good candidate.

    If Gen Z is the key to the election, it will turn on abortion and student loan debt cancellation, no matter how unconstitutional the latter might be. Heck, if somebody told me they were going to cancel my mortgage, I'd vote for 'em without a second thought--our kids can clean up the mess later, right?

    I dunno. I keep hearing the Georgia Governor and Bill Barr state on tv they’ll vote for however the Republican presidential candidate is.

    Biden could have a soaring economy, do Irish clog dancing everytime he’s in public, do a triathlon, and get his dog to stop biting people, and my guess is Republicans will go “but Hunter…” and vote for Trump.

    A man I know said in 2016 he would vote for Clinton if he thought i would give the Republicans a better chance in 2020. In his state, he could safely vote for a third party and avoid the Hobson's Choice. He was right about 2020. He grossly underestimated the staying power of Trumpism. As the column points out, even 2028 is not looking so good at this point.
