    Sarah, we must have had similar internal syllabi for reading in high school. I totally second Frany and Zooey > Slaughterhouse-Five. But unfortunately, Mdme. Bovary just didn't had the sizzle I was looking for... I sought out selections from Ian McEwan novels instead. (Also, my AP gvt teacher was a Rush Limbaugh parrot, which didn't go over well with me, so I would write subversive punk lyrics and left wing news updates on his board before he arrived in class and then would read Chuck Palaniuk novels in the back of the class during his lectures -- I mean diatribes.)

    Bit of a request, could you please put the animal stories at the back end of the episode, or at least time stamp when the more traditional AO content will start? I don't hate animals, or dislike that Sarah has a big heart, it's that when I am ready to get my legal updates and law nerdery on, that's what I hope to hear shortly after pressing play on the podcast. This is coming from a place of loving the podcast since its inception and hope to hear it continue into perpetuity, and continue to hear from guest lawyers and judges from all sorts of fun and unique sub areas.

    I can't find where to ask an unrelated question so ..... Can you explain to one of the great unwashed how and / or why so many trials carry on for such an indeterminate amount of time? Case in point, the shooting in Florida at Stoneman Douglas school 4YEARS AGO, where there is no question of who the perpetrator was, and now 4 YEARS LATER the judge has given a FURTHER extension to the legal group defending the accused to work on their approach to sentencing. In 4 YEARS this hasn't been considered? Why is the US legal system is so puzzling, convoluted and favoring those with resources? And while we are on it, thoughts on the judiciary being such a political football (PBS News Hour tonight, highlighting or praising Biden for the number of judges the Democrates have appointed, and of course there is the Federalist society's work on early appointments?). One thinks of the requirement for the Rule of Law and how it sets apart democratic countries from autocratic countries. And please, oh please don't state that appointment to the bench is not political.

      I dont know the specifics of why that trial has been delayed...but as a general matter, our criminal justice system is built to give every break to the defendant. If the defendant wants to get to trial quickly, they are entitled to a speedy trial. If they want it to drag out for years, by and large they can do that as well.

    Anyone who is in a position to hire lawyers should think very hard before hiring one who is a recent or future graduate of Georgetown. It sickens me to observe the absurd behavior of all parties involved. Last time I looked (this morning) my company has no dedicated places to cry.

    Sarah, sent this to my college sophomore daughter. She and I do not share the same spectrum in politics, but she is a big animal advocate, a defender of free speech, and finds the election process fascinating. I did add trigger warnings and am waiting to read what she thinks--but the whole pod made me think we might be able to talk about your topics. without too much tension. Thanks.

    Also when it comes to teachers rescuing roadkill for the class: in 4th grade my teacher was a bit of a crunchy hippie. Some student found an injured (and possibly sick) bat and we decided to take care of it as a class experiment. All of the boys touched it and somehow managed to avoid starting the coronavirus pandemic 14 years early. The bat died and we buried it outside the classroom and it was an interesting lesson on death.

    Sarah, you force me (once again), to speak out in defense of Billy Budd. I am surprised at the defamation that that exploration of the difference between natural law and man-made law receives on such an esteemed legal podcast. I will not stand for it! To be sure, Billy Budd stands in the shadow of Moby Dick - with reason - but Billy Budd is compact, readable, and free of all whale-anatomy tangents. None of those things can be said about Moby Dick. I’m with you on the Great Gatsby though. It’s supposed to be a great American novel but I just don’t get much out of it.

    Also, as someone who spent a fair amount of time in a public elementary school library 20 years ago (possibly to the day), we had plenty of black authors! I think the librarian was reading poems by Langston Hughes to us in first grade.

    Sharing my wife's animal rescue story, we came across an owl that was injured out at the horse ranch. My wife used to be a vet tech, so we brought it home, and then to the vet. Unfortunately he died shortly there after. Then all the bugs that live on him left and invaded the poor vet's office.

    I share David's exasperation at his neighbors; I have a lot of the same problems. But it seems to me that there is much more of an issue with woke librarians filling dumpsters full of library books for not meeting current standards or offending gaia than these yahoos. I've seen several mentions of facebook posts of librarians bragging about this policy, quickly taken down, but they never get any mainstream attention because they don't give us a chance to have a good belly laugh at the Trumpkins.
    As for book recommendations for young people I'd strongly recommend Two Years Before the Mast, by Richard Dana - an author with a fascinating biography.
