All of them can be circus performers (a clown acrobat, strong man, etc) and a parent can be a ringmaster…. The possibilities!!

    Regarding social media:

    It's nearly universal — but very unfortunate in my view — that almost all such discussions as the one published in this podcast start from a premise that all solutions to any problems with social media ought come from, and be enforced by, government.

    That's a statist trap. I think I might have read something about this in the past from both Jonah Goldberg and David French.

    Here's a thought: How about if TheDispatch.com were to strike a blow for private initiative as the means to address the problems with social media?

    I suggest that said blow should be struck not by terminating your fact-checking arrangement with Facebook, which I view as a neutral-to-positive thing, but by focusing instead on the single most abrasive agent in world political affairs right now: We all know what that is, don't we?

    It's Twitter, and by an incredibly wide margin.

    It is neither a surprise nor a coincidence that a medium specifically created to TRUNCATE thoughtful and constructive speech after an arbitrary number of ASCII characters led to Donald Trump's presidency, but that's only the most spectacular of its many, many harmful effects upon us all.

    Twitter delenda est.

    Stop embedding its links; find links to alternative media with the same content, and even when there are none, stop sending Twitter more eyeballs and mouse-clicks. Stop feeding the troll factory. And use all your persuasive arts to encourage others "in media" to do the same, or failing that, to at least acknowledge that individual discipline beats government coercion as a solution to this problem.
