Happy Wednesday! Everyone is going to have bad days at work, but only a select few have bad days that involve accidentally firing a missile into the territory of a neighboring nuclear power. India’s air force fired three military officers on Tuesday for doing just that in March.

(That’s the story India is going with, at least.)

    Why in THE WORLD would we trust Iran about anything?
    If we want the oil just say so.
    Don't try to hide it behind some sort of diplomatic rationalization that is pure poppycock to any American with even a small percentage of a working brain .... republicans and democrats alike.

    It seems risky to take down (humiliate) Russia with the Ukrainian war. Are there any signs that Russia or Ukraine would be interested in pulling back from the war and accepting the status quo? From what I've been reading it seems like they're kind of at a stalemate right now with no big changes in areas dominated by either side. If there is an opportunity to pull back do you think that Putin and the rest of Russia's power structure would have learned any lessons?

    Do you see a renewed Iran deal changing Biden and the Democrats’ fortunes ahead of the midterms, either one way or the other?
    No.
    Our public is hugely more concerned about continuing inflation, availability of jobs, the continuing and excessively high crime rate, and the our open southern border.
    Let’s hope that Bide doesn’t give away concessions to Iran that damage our nation’s security.

    Yawn.
    If the Fed raises interest rates significantly - say Fed funds to about 3.5% or 4% (now 2.25 to 2.50) - that likely crashes the economy, even though Biden continues spending. If the Fed also does QT, as it indicated, that would accelerate the decline.
    If the Fed backs off of increasing rates and QT, inflation continues to surge.
    The esteemed Fed is in a box, as they deserve. Their only proper job is what they were created to do: provide liquidity to solvent banks experiencing bank runs.
    Hopefully, Fed credibility for manipulating interest rates and the money supply will be shredded.

    I don’t think a new Iran deal will hurt Biden unless Iran bombs Israel or us.
    But this is just a dumb move. Appeasing France/EU for Trump pulling out? No money Obama gave Iran went to its people: it went to Hamas, weapons, and proxy wars.

    Iran isn’t imperialist, and thus not as bad as Russia and China, which wage and threaten terrible conquests. Nor Sunni, who did far worse to us than hold an embassy staff hostage. We need Iran now to flood the oil market and undercut our more dangerous enemies.

    Let’s adjust our perspective by recalling Reza Shah, the King of Kings, and his desert party at Persepolis for the world’s first international jet set. The sovereign dressed 6,000 soldiers in the uniforms every dynasty going back to the Achaemenids and paraded them under the stars while thousands of spectators drank Champaign.

    Just days before angry mobs defied the security police to demonstrate against the Shah, President Carter raised a glass of Champaign in Tehran to toast the Shah for creating an “island of stability.”

    Neocons complain that we can’t treat the Ayatollahs as a “bad phase”. Of course we can, because they are. They too shall pass (but we’ll have the neocons among us always, alas).

    Here’s the thing about Iran: unless we invade and conquer, Iran will have nuclear weapons. The only question is the timing: 5 weeks, or 5 years.

    Everybody is arguing over an inevitability. Count me in on the “Does not care” club, but with a caveat: I DO care…I just know there’s not a damned thing we could about it.

    I feel the same about a deal with Iran as I do about the EU's deals with Russia regarding energy.

    On the Twitter thing: "Mudge" is famous in cybersecurity / hacker / cypherpunk circles; he was a pretty big name in the 90s. I think this is one of those cases where a previous CEO / founder (Jack Dorsey) hired someone to be purposefully provocative in attacking a real problem the executive felt but wasn't sure how to fix, then a new executive came in and did not want that approach at all, so they butt heads and he was eventually fired.

    It is not surprising that Twitter has poor practices like this, the company is well known for being a shambles, for it's whole history. It's not good, but it's not surprising.

    But notably, none of this has anything to do with Musk's shenanigans.
