To distinguish The Remnant’s 400th episode, Jonah thought it would be refreshing to bring on a guest renowned among fans for his cheerfulness: Kevin Williamson, National Review’s roving correspondent.     I enjoyed the episode and always find Kevin Williamson to have valuable insights.
    The Dispatch, I believe, has stated that one of their goals is to address the best version of opposing arguments. This is a good standard. However, I believe Goldberg and Williamson fail to live up to the standard when discussing anti-elite sentiment. Part of the reason for this is that "anti-elite" is not a very good description of the phenomenon. I suspect most populists would whole-heartedly agree with the facile rejoinder "you wouldn't want an average Joe to be your doctor, would you?" (I'm paraphrasing from memory here). This doesn't really respond to what I think the actual complaint is, though. Rather, anti-elitests (and I occasionally include myself in this group) are unconvinced that those who claim the mantle of expertise in order to gain political authority deserve that mantle. Most recently, I can point to the decisions of US military leadership with regards to Afghanistan as justification for this mindset.

    Do I have amnesia or did you say something about the 400th episode when you had Peter Suderman on?

    For the 500th episode, get that Eastern European guy who did a whole podcast impersonating you for some bizarre and inscrutable purposes.

    In March, I probably would have thought Kevin’s take that the coup is continuing was overblown but increasingly it seems like he’s right. That Eastman memo is worse and worse the more I think about it.

    As an entrepreneur myself, I appreciated their recognition that success in business does not automatically transfer to politics. Crafting legislation is very hard work that is much, much different from running a top-down enterprise. Same for managing large, permanent bureaucracies. You can't just clap your hands and will things into action.

    Please bring Kevin back to elaborate on his nod towards the technocratic/regulatory state around the 40-44’ mark. I want to hear more about the “capital P people” and how no one is qualified to challenge elite opinions unless you go get a PhD in the field. No wonder so many commentators return to their pet topics like a dog to its vomit;they want to stay in their lane. If only. This is why we elect decision-makers who aren’t philosophers or scientists but who have the gift of political prudence...Oh, wait, maybe he’s on to something.

    Great conversation as always - and happy 400th.

    One thought on the Journal of Sifting. I really like the metaphor. However, to my mind, the sifting of "small problems" to be suggests that questions about pregnancy and abortion must be sifted down to the level of the family and the individual - the only level that has the requisite knowledge and closeness to the situation to make a decision. Utah and Connecticut are very different, but so is every single pregnancy and every woman's life. If just has to sift down to that level.

    Although I am generally in favor of gun regulations, I think it makes sense to "sift" those down to the state or local level. It it's just not possible with abortion and reproductive health.

    So there you go - the American Journal of Sifting" is a pro choice tract!
