The end of another week brings another unfocused, ultra-rambling Ruminant, which finds Jonah aggravated by a fresh potpourri of political asininity. Featured topics today include the crisis at the border and Biden’s declining credibility, similarities between the radicalism of the young right and left, and the incoherence of arguments for student loan debt forgiveness. There’s even some brief criticism of the Clintons mixed in for anyone feeling nostalgic.

    This is kind of a difficult thought to put into words: Student loan forgiveness is a front to launder embezzled tax revenue under the guise/pretense/charade of magnanimity (IF YOU WILL!) when the true intent is corruption in the form of buying votes.

    A mobster's restaurant is a front to launder illegally earned money under the guise/pretense/charade it's legally earned via a legitimate business; yet the intent is not to own a restaurant (it being the front) but to conduct criminal activity for money. So it all follows.

    That first Skiff episode was really good by the way.

    Last five minutes (of this podcast) the bit about windmills and whales - absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. A basic logical fallacy that is surprisingly common. One expects more of NPR. That’s easily refuted.

    I am deeply distressed by the loss of small government conservatism as a major force in American politics. We now have two parties who see the function of the government as growing as large as possible to better reward supporters and punish enemies.

    This can't end well.

    I don't follow the push to EVs that closely, but there is one issue I haven't heard discussed (though I may have missed it). What, if anything, is being done to increase the capacity of electrical grids to accommodate the number of new EVs being proposed? California often has rolling blackouts. Where I live in Texas, we had 66 days above 100 degrees this summer, and I received repeated requests from my utility company asking me to conserve electricity because to prevent rolling blackouts here. Am I just missing the conversation?

    I am so with you about the drumbeat of lectures on climate change. Among the many problems I have with the so-called MSM is the constant harping on the subject, as if the science is long settled and the remedies agreed on by all right thinking folk.

    Entertaining podcast, as usual. Amazing how you are able to talk extemporaneously that long.

    re: the border

    You can't have a coherent immigration policy without control of your borders. Also the mayhem is unacceptable. Biden needs to get on top of the situation. However, Trump/MAGA saying immigrants are"poisoning the blood of our country" is a whole next level of awful.

    re: student loans

    I'm not in favor of student loan forgiveness because it doesn't solve the problem.
    However, they aren't the same as mortgages. It's a racket. One big thing is they aren't dischargeable. Maybe they should change that and see if the market solves the problem.

    re: both sides-ism

    I'm fine with criticism of Biden. However I'm seeing a permission structure being built to enable non-MAGA conservatives to vote for Trump - or at least to not vote for Biden. Unlike NR, I don't believe that's TD's intent but that is the effect. You may not like Biden's personality or policies but Trump is unfit for office. I thought we all agreed on that.
