Since the war in Ukraine began, Jonah has made a habit of plugging the Telegraph’s daily podcast on the subject, Ukraine: The Latest. Today, Francis Dearnley—an assistant comment editor at the newspaper and one of the podcast’s regular hosts—joins The Remnant for an in-depth look at how the show gets made, and what the future holds for Ukraine. Other topics include the fatal allure of historical determinism, the dreary state of British politics, and why Woodrow Wilson is still history’s greatest monster.

    Realized this AM that I never commented on how great this podcast episode was. I too am a big fan of "Ukraine: The Latest," and so hearing from Francis in a different context, with more about his background, etc., was terrific. Thanks!

    The last 15 minutes or so Francis's passion and thoughtfulness on the issue of academia abandoning its responsibilities really shone through. It was great. Very good discussion all around.

    I finally got to the end of this.

    I think it would be a stronger argument if you rejected the contention that "settler colonialism" is something that matters. It doesn't. It's every current human society's past or present - talking about you, Mexicans in my neighborhood - so it has no moral valence.

    By rejecting the Marxist framing, you get out of arguments over who is or isn't.

    Since I listen to both The Remnant and Ukraine: The Latest, I had to get over the “Batman Meets Scooby-Doo” weirdness of this crossover episode, but this was a great interview and Francis Dearnley was a fantastic guest.

    This is small potatoes, but I collect and make content about colognes and perfumes and have noticed that shipping from the UK since brexit has been a nightmare. And it makes no sense. Why is shipping between our closest ally so hard?

    Avid listener of both Remnant and Ukraine the latest podcast. Wonderful dialog. Francis is a very impressive and articulate speaker . His historical knowledge is as good as any I have heard on this podcast. Having two of my favorite Podcaster together was a real treat.

    Great interview. His comment on the difficulty of finding a party who really wants to solve problems sure resonated with me -- I will vote for literally anyone (here in Canada) who convinces me that he (or she) wants to actually fix, build, and improve things, not just sneer at the other side.

    Excellent guest. One point that I don’t hear often enough: why is there a giant boycott of X but not a word from the same institutions about TikTok? I know there’s some disdain for Elon around these parts - partially deserved - but he is correct on this point.

    You’ve got all these companies and media outlets relentlessly pushing this X is anti-Semitic narrative and meanwhile, not a peep about TikTok. How is this reality? Last year, I nearly spit my egg nog all over the television when I saw the TikTok halftime show on the Military Bowl.

    It’s absurd to talk about censoring or banning the app but the idea that MLB can boycott the state of Georgia or Disney can boycott X while they have no problem doing business in China or on TikTok is unbelievably absurd. Nobody points this out and it annoys the hell out of me.
