    While I am with Steve on being happy for anyone who finally sees the light and is willing to call out Trump, I also think anybody who was part of his administration is, for me, disqualified from holding office. Either they were grifters trying to get money/power off of Trump’s halo, or they were too stupid to see Trump for what he was. Both are disqualifying.

    The whole Civil War talk confuses me. In the Civil War of 1861, the South had legitimate interests that it was defending. What legitimate interests are the new secessetionists defending? It’s entirely unclear. They’re outraged over alleged injustices that exist only in their heads. This is one of the greatest countries in the world in which to live. Be grateful, turn off Mark Levin, and enjoy the bounty that being a citizen of this country affords you.

    Mary, good report on COVID. Please follow Dr. Offit's lead to address influenza and other communicable diseases. Anything we can do to remove the COVID-related stigma from discussions with doctors (infectious disease specialists, virologists, public health doctors, etc.) will be of great value to the nation in the short- and long-term.

    Obviously, I don't __know__, but maybe the reason Biden sticks so close to his son (even though Hunter is clearly a screwup on many levels) is because Joe Biden is worried that this sort of political aggression will cause Hunter to harm himself (indeed, including possibly suicide). Hunter clearly has had bouts of being thoroughly mucked up in the head, and I cannot think that this violence from the press (though he largely brought it on himself and his father) will not have consequences on him.

    Think for a moment about Monika Lewinsky. Politics used her and tossed her in the trash bin when it was done with her. Was she in the news afterward? ... occasionally ... However, her family had to deal with the mess that all that press and brutal politics did. It is true that Clinton fell into sin, and Lewinsky was party to it, but keep in mind that the violence of publicity and public opinion also greatly damaged the life of a young woman in an effort to get at Bill Clinton. She experienced an execrable level of ___rottenness___ from the system for her brief moment of naive stupidity.

    Hunter is older and should have thought a little more deeply. However, he is Joe Biden's son. I think we should not forget about that.

      While I respect the point you are trying to make, it’s a bit romantic. Nobody made Biden run for president, nobody is making him stay in office and nobody is making him run for another turn. If I thought my job was killing me or my family, I would quit tomorrow. If Biden thinks Hunter can’t handle the heat, one thing that would definitely turn down the temperature is stepping out of the public light - kind of the exact opposite of everything they’re doing.

      The idea of Biden as loving father gets thrown out to cover a multitude of flaws and it just doesn’t pass muster.

        Thank you for your comment. You may very well be right.

        Let's take human beings out of this matter, because our righteousness is a basket of filthy rags.

        Perhaps you believe in God, but even if you don't believe in God, just for the sake of a thought experiment, suppose that there is this God and somehow you can know this as fact. Let's even push it further and say that you can know that somehow Jesus is the son of God and all that. (Mainly because I am Christian, so it is the picture that I am most able to describe. We could say that Buddhism is the truth and Siddhartha Gautama came back from the dead to instruct his followers. ... though that forces some deep "theological issues" since he was also a human being. ...) Anyway, given that is all true, we are stuck with the Bible and what is there. Remember "given" and somehow, you are graced with knowing that this picture of ultimate reality is fact.

        So let's suppose that Jesus runs for president. ... According to the scriptures, Jesus is empathetic, knowing and discerning the hearts of man, he's compassionate and is working for good in the world (and you know this to be fact), and he is just and we can trust his decisions. These are basically all the things we should basically want. Yet his offer is salvation, justice, hope, etc.

        ... and yet, how would this play out? As the Grand Inquisitor cynically berated Jesus, promising eternal life, goodness, and hope is not their concern. People want to see the bread from the stones. They want drama, a show. Jesus has it all wrong. Then we go into all the myriad of issues that all of us have, if we are honest, with the Bible itself, and all the bad things that happen in the world. Again, the quandary of theodicy aside, you would know that there is an explanation because we assume this is "given". It seems pretty clear to me in today's political environment, that Jesus would lose the election, and probably by a large margin, and even many Christians would probably prefer their Barabas over the King of the Jews.

        So if even God cannot get elected by our system, then who would get elected? Maybe the one who offers the bread and games. Power, that's what we want.

        So now we shut down the thought experiment. What of us human beings? Although Trump behaves like a reprobate, we who are faithful have to grant that such is for God to decide, not us. Biden? I don't know, maybe he is a mob boss. He surely has some stuff hidden in a closet somewhere, who doesn't? ... and this is what really bugs me about the current state of politics. Trump seems rather exceptionally egregious, but all these politicians have serious flaws. So if you pursue this thought experiment on humans, such fishing expeditions will always turn up something. Heaven knows what they would manage to turn up about me. So we end up more and more, by that evolutionary selection process, to increasingly turn out either more and more oleaginous characters, or more and more pugilistic characters.

        I don't know where in the grade of greasy slipperiness Biden falls, but if anything, we, the American public, in our lust to know the bawdy details of the highest office, actually ruin the chance of flawed but competent people doing their job for the nation. How is that working out for us? The "selection process" should be "competence", not these cheap soundbite morality shows. All have sinned and fallen short of the Grace of God. Moreover, God provides his sun to all of us whether we believe in God or not. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. If God graciously provides us dirty rags his sunshine and grace, how much more should we, as deeply flawed human beings, love even our delinquent, prodigal, wayward children?

        Maybe Biden is a mob boss, and my argument doesn't apply. Nevertheless, I think we are supposed to presume innocence until proven guilty (which includes the apparent reprobate too). This looks mostly like a fishing expedition. I was outraged at Bill Clinton's little blue dress matter, it does besmirch the office. Yet the investigation started out with whitewater and finally ended up there. I think the press was a bit disingenuous (in retrospect) about Clinton's other escapades. Those were probably true. ... and yet, while they were judging one man, several of them were doing exactly the same. Do you really think that God just says that's fine?

        Anyway, the fact is, if you look long and hard enough at anyone's life, you will find the smut. It is the journey that matters, it is learning to follow Jesus wherever that leads us (at least for a believing Christian like me).
