We are happy to be back for another Dispatch Live, but not happy to be discussing yet another mass shooting. Steve, Jonah, and David start the conversation by discussing David’s latest newsletter, which looks at why these mass shootings keep occurring. Why are young men in America committing these horrible acts of violence? Then, the trio talk about Donald Trump’s grip on the GOP … or lack thereof. Will Trump announce his run for president too soon? Who else will run against him in the primary?

    Realizing that Jonah's articulation was just a little misfired, I'd like to clarify that the moral panic against D&D was never a part of a societal filter for maladjustment, and was always entirely silly. The only societal filtering that was performed by it was for people with a miscalibrated BS detector.
    At least I assume Jonah didn't intend it to sound like at one time, if you found out someone played D&D, you should be just a little careful around them.

    Great Dispatch Live. David, yes we are screaming for a third choice if it’s trump/biden again. Jonah start pushing your pardon idea, we need to dispose of that petulant child. Steve, I agree we need the republicans to talk down trump. He has no concern for the country, only his ego.

    After David French mentioned 'Our Kids', I ended up buying the audiobook. I'm about a third through it and I'll probably buy 'Bowling Alone' next. Thanks for the recommendation!

    As a new subscriber, I am impressed with this weekly format, but dismayed that a woman commentator I was not included. As Jonah stated in the initial segment, we are wired differently, and just might offer a viewpoint that might illuminate a discussion. Come on guys…,equal representation!

    Last night was the first opportunity I hand to watch The Dispatch live. Really enjoyed it. Just curious if Steve Hayes thanks God every night before he goes to sleep, for his looking just like George Clooney?

          I wasn’t trying to be rude. Actually in a dispatch live maybe a year ago someone asked a question about Steve and George Clooney and Sarah and Jonah had a laugh about it and made some crack about him being shall we say less physically fit than George Clooney.

    Third-party runs do not accomplish anything in our system due to the electoral college and winner-take-all rules. Ross Perot got 19% of the vote in 1992... he did not win a single state. In 2016, Evan McMullin got close in Utah but still lost to Trump. Liz Cheney would draw away votes from both parties but more from Democrats (just like Perot drew away a bit more votes from Republicans). This makes a Trump win MORE likely. On the other hand, were Trump to run as an independent, he would have just delivered the White House to the Democrats. Until we reform (or - perish the thought! - abolish) the electoral college, we are stuck with the two-party system.

    I don't know about some of this sense of how "obvious" signs were that this was a "troubled" young man. It feels like this is "easy" or "obvious" in light of the shooting and Steve is ignoring the fact that he is looking back at past events through that lens. I definitely agree, however, that this guy should have failed one of the many background checks that he seemingly passed when being issued a FOID card.
