“Title 42,” the pandemic-era immigration restriction, was slated to expire December 21, until the Supreme Court stepped in. Now, the Biden administration and conservatives are in loggerheads on what to do next. Esther sits down with Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, the Policy Director at American Immigration Council to discuss the historical context behind Title 42, its impact on border crossings, and what we might expect if it goes away.

    I’ve listened to this podcast several times. Finally I have enough understanding to have what seems the beginning of an informed opinion of my own on this issue. Beginning with Title 42 is not immigration law, it is a public health law….

    I thought this podcast was very informative. So much of what we hear about immigration is just sloganeering and uninformed b.s. from the extremes. That said, as soon as I heard that Aaron was a legal aid attorney, I knew exactly what his biases would be and I was not disappointed.

    I think the show would have benefited by adding a second guest who had a more hawkish view of how to more effectively reduce the torrent of illegal immigration. Our asylum system is exploited by legal aid lawyers and Big Law pro bono to go well beyond its intended purposes so I think Aaron clearly has a dog in this fight.

    For future shows, I would be interested in understanding on whether we could use some of our anti terrorism organized crime tools against the immigration smugglers which seems to be a logical approach though I have not heard it discussed.

    I like the Dispatch because it the organizers reflect a type of principled conservatism which has become very rare, but the Staff does not seem to buy into that vision.
