Today’s episode of The Dispatch Podcast is a little bit different than the typical Friday version. Steve interviewed Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse at the Aspen Security Forum on the topic of America’s response to the digital revolution across the globe. Among some of the more interesting topics discussed: China and “chuckleheads,” as Sen. Sasse refers to some members of Congress. Sen. Sasse explains why even though the country faces an immense amount of problems he is still optimistic about the future.

    Just now got to this. What an excellent discussion. Even though I have my disagreements with Sasse, he’s someone who actually applies reason and logic. I wish we had more like him.

    I wrote this in Monday's Morning Dispatch comments section. Here's my (probably too sour) review of this episode:

    The Dispatch Podcast with Ben Sasse was underwhelming for me. He skipped like a stone on a lake, touching the surface of numerous topics very, very lightly before rushing on to the next topic, talking at breakneck speed. A transcript might help me actually let some of his points sink in, and unfortunately they were just points. Maybe they were more connected to rational arguments than I remember, but by the time I considered one, he had gone through two or more points and was on to another. Then there were some abstruse references: the X-axis, Y-axis was particularly gibberishtical.

    I've gotta say, though, the overall subject was interesting and I love Sasse, so I may just torture myself into listening to the podcast again.

    But for now, Sasse's stone skipping just reminded me of this, which, as I recall, was sung at about the same speed as Sasse was talking (but with less repetition):

    Ya got trouble,
    Right here in River city!
    With a capital "T"
    And that rhymes with "P"
    And that stands for Pool.
    We've surely got trouble!
    Right here in River City!
    Remember the Maine, Plymouth Rock and the Golden Rule!

    Strange. Scientists tell us that women and men have brains that are very differently wired, yet the "party of science" maintains that if women and men aren't equally represented in every aspect of life then our society is irredeemably sexist and corrupt.

    Excellent conversation/Q and A. A lot to unpack. I will be thinking about this for some time. Ben Sasse has a greater ability than any other politician to synthesize the complex challenges we face today.

    I’ll note that the professor who introduced Steve and Senator Sasse pronounced “Dispatch” the same way as David! “With the emphasis on the wrong syllaable” as Austin Powers might tell us.
