It sure looks like it’s over. But a process has to play out. Is DeSantis done for? Have Trump’s (new) indictments made any difference at all? Steve is now offering ground steak from Carl’s Jr. (with an upsized drink) while Sarah is betting on a dinner more expensive than previously thought. Note: genuine Wisconsin cheese curds have been added to the bet.

      1. Pick the device you wish to listen on
      2. On it, make sure you're logged into the dispatch.com
      3. Go to: https://members.thedispatch.com/account/feed
      4. Select "The Skiff" (this will include all of the Dispatch's private feeds!)
      5. Find your iOS and select Apple Podcasts.
      6. Subscribe

    Of course you need to wait until the convention. The bet from the beginning (go back and listen to the Dispatch podcast from winter of 2021) was who “will be the nominee” from each party. Not, “what will the primaries decide.” Will be the nominee. I believe I have heard Sarah say those words a number of times.

    It seems to me that once the indictments started coming out, the nomination of Trump became inevitable. Most people in either party don't vote for a candidate - they vote against the other guy. In that case, the only question becomes "who is the strongest candidate from our party". The common heuristic for that is "who is everyone talking about the most", and the media on all sides just can't stop talking about Trump, because he is such a juicy story they "have to" cover it. Not to cast shade on my favorite news outlet, but even The Dispatch has two podcasts dedicated to Trump and nothing similar on any other candidate. When Trump was just a has-been doing whatever in Florida and not getting any airtime, his poll numbers were at their lowest. Now everyone will be talking about him non-stop until the election, which means they won't be talking about the other candidates or substantive issues. When they do mention them, it is in the context of how weak they are compared to Trump. All of that continually sends the message that Trump is powerful and nobody else is a serious contender, which becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy. It is 2016 all over again.

    I'm still betting on nature. Which means for Steve a split.

    I've been musing on my rusty statistics and while the chance of either one of these two dying or having some other clearly removing event is a straightforward calculation, I suspect the possibility of one of the two is not as easy or obvious to calculate.

    I do think Steve still has the better bet, even though he’s more likely to lose. Because if he wins, that steak will taste so much better. If Sarah wins, the outcome is disappointing and the result was expected, there’s nothing to celebrate except the food.

    Nobody ever bet “hey I bet our team gets knocked out in the first round of the playoffs, because I’m a pessimist and at least I’ll get a good meal as a consolation”.

    "Gets stuff done" -- Trump winning on that question by such an overwhelming margin, is just one more piece of evidence on a giant mountain, that Trump has created a cult inside the GOP. These core MAGA people are beyond reason and beyond evidence. They've joined a cult. Their behavior and responses to these polling questions, is akin to cultists making excuses for why the cult leader is able to sleep with their spouse with their consent, or why the aliens didn't come as promised, or why the apocalypse didn't happen when it was supposed to.
