    I rarely think of Rome. And I've asked every male friend I have how often they think of Rome and they all looked at me like I was crazy. I really find it hard to believe that most men spend a lot of time thinking about Rome.

    Great stuff! Thank you Jonah and Bret.

    I'd always assumed "stele" was pronounced more like "staylay", guessing those two e's derived from Greek etas. Hearing Bret Devereaux pronounce it "steely" made me look it up, and apparently I was wrong; his pronounciation seems to be the usual one. Oh, well. Now I'm off to listen to some Stele Dan. ;)

    I always enjoy hearing from (and reading) Bret Deveraux. This was a fantastic podcast. One minor quibble I have is that, while I don't think Trump has the competence, intelligence, or drive to become a dictator, he's increasingly surrounded himself with the kinds of people who could facilitate it since he lost re-election. But in either event, we can't vote him back in. (Having said that, the Biden admin hasn't exactly been an exercise in institution building or honoring norms either, not to mention the very Roman nepotism and influence peddling that they've been involved with. No wonder we think about Rome constantly--the fact that we're facing an election between these two is the most potent symbol of our decadence I can think of).

    There must have been a reason for the cut, and I understand this means I may not get an answer. I can't be the only one who wonders what got cut out after describing the Romans as 0 or 100 type people.

    Any quick sketch? A brief outline? A hint at a shadow of what we missed?
